Learn How to Make Cloud Slime at Home

What Is Cloud Slime and Why People Make It

Cloud slime is a stretchy, fluffy material that looks and feels like a soft cloud. Unlike regular slime that's often sticky and thick, cloud slime has an airy, moldable texture that springs back when you squeeze it. The material was popularized on social media around 2017 and has remained a popular craft project for children and adults. Cloud slime typically feels similar to slime mixed with shaving cream, creating something that's both squishy and satisfying to play with.

People make cloud slime for various reasons. Children enjoy it as a sensory toy that provides tactile satisfaction. Some people find the process of making and stretching slime calming and stress-relieving. The craft appeals to those interested in chemistry and how different materials combine to create new textures. Teachers and parents sometimes use cloud slime projects as educational activities to teach basic science concepts like polymers and chemical reactions.

The popularity of cloud slime has grown because it's relatively safe compared to some other slime recipes, costs less than five dollars to make, and requires only common household items or inexpensive materials. Many variations exist, including versions with glitter, food coloring, foam beads, or different scents. The flexibility in recipes means you can customize cloud slime to match your preferences or available materials.

Practical Takeaway: Cloud slime offers a fun, affordable craft activity that teaches basic chemistry principles while providing sensory enjoyment. Understanding what cloud slime is helps you decide if this project matches your interests and what variations might appeal to you most.

Gathering the Right Materials and Ingredients

Making cloud slime requires only a few basic ingredients that most households already contain. The essential materials include shaving cream (regular foam type works best), liquid laundry detergent, cornstarch, and water. Some recipes substitute contact lens solution for laundry detergent, though both methods produce similar results. You'll also need food coloring if you want colored slime, though this is optional. A mixing bowl, spoon, and measuring cups round out your basic supply list.

Shaving cream forms the base of cloud slime and gives it that fluffy, cloud-like texture. Regular foam shaving cream works better than gel formulas. One standard can of shaving cream (typically 10-11 ounces) makes enough cloud slime for several batches. The cornstarch acts as a thickening agent that transforms the wet mixture into a moldable substance. Most recipes use between one-quarter cup to one-half cup of cornstarch per batch. Liquid laundry detergent or contact lens solution activates the mixture, making it transition from a liquid to a solid state. The reaction between these ingredients creates the polymer chains that give slime its stretchy properties.

Before beginning, gather all materials in one location. This preparation prevents interruptions and ensures you have adequate quantities of each ingredient. If you don't have certain items, inexpensive substitutions often work. Dollar stores and discount retailers typically carry shaving cream, laundry detergent, and cornstarch at low prices. Food coloring is optional but adds visual interest without affecting the slime's texture or function.

Optional ingredients for customization include glitter, foam beads, edible glitter, essential oils or fragrance oils for scent, sequins, or metallic paint. These additions don't change the basic slime-making process but provide creative variations. Keep optional ingredients separate until after you've made basic cloud slime successfully at least once.

Practical Takeaway: Gather shaving cream, cornstarch, laundry detergent or contact lens solution, and a mixing bowl before starting. Most ingredients cost under one dollar and are available at drugstores or discount retailers. Optional additions like glitter or food coloring can personalize your slime but aren't necessary for the basic recipe.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Cloud Slime

The basic process for making cloud slime takes approximately 10-15 minutes from start to finish. Start by pouring one can of shaving cream into your mixing bowl. Use a standard 10-11 ounce can rather than extra-strength formulas. Stir the shaving cream briefly to ensure it has an even consistency. If you want colored slime, add 3-5 drops of food coloring directly into the shaving cream and mix thoroughly until the color is uniform. The exact number of drops depends on how vibrant you want the final color to be.

Next, add one-quarter cup of cornstarch to the shaving cream mixture. Mix these ingredients together using a spoon or your hands. The mixture will be thick and difficult to stir at first, which is normal. Continue mixing until the cornstarch is fully incorporated and the texture becomes more uniform. At this stage, the mixture should resemble thick cake batter or dough.

Add one tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent to the mixture. If using contact lens solution instead, add the same amount. Stir immediately and constantly as you add this ingredient. The mixture will begin to change texture within 10-20 seconds as the activator reacts with the cornstarch and shaving cream. The mixture will become less sticky and start to pull away from the sides of the bowl. This reaction happens because the activator creates polymer chains that give slime its stretchy properties.

Once the mixture becomes too thick to stir easily, remove it from the bowl and work it with your hands. Knead the cloud slime as you would bread dough for 2-3 minutes. The more you work it, the less sticky it becomes. If the slime still feels overly sticky after hand-kneading, sprinkle a small amount of additional cornstarch (one teaspoon at a time) and knead again. Add cornstarch gradually to avoid making the slime too dry and crumbly. The final texture should be stretchy, moldable, and only slightly sticky to the touch. Once finished, store your cloud slime in an airtight container for later use.

Practical Takeaway: Follow the ingredient order precisely: shaving cream, cornstarch, food coloring, then laundry detergent. Mix thoroughly at each stage, and knead by hand until the slime reaches the desired texture. This basic method produces cloud slime in under 15 minutes with minimal cleanup.

Troubleshooting Common Cloud Slime Problems

Several issues can occur during cloud slime making, but most have straightforward solutions. If your slime is too sticky, the most common cause is using too much shaving cream relative to activator, or not adding enough cornstarch. Add cornstarch one teaspoon at a time and knead thoroughly between additions until the stickiness decreases. Another possibility is that your laundry detergent is too diluted or the brand doesn't activate slime properly. Different detergent brands have varying concentrations of active ingredients, which affects their ability to create the desired texture. Trying a different brand sometimes resolves this issue.

If your cloud slime is too stiff and dry, you've likely added too much cornstarch or activator. In this case, knead the mixture with a small amount of lotion or baby oil to add moisture and increase stretchiness. Add oil or lotion very gradually, as a little goes a long way. Another approach is to start over with the correct proportions, as the recovery process uses additional materials and may not produce optimal results.

If the mixture isn't thickening at all after adding the activator, several factors could be responsible. The laundry detergent might be too old or a brand that doesn't work well for slime making. Alternatively, the shaving cream might be gel-based rather than foam-based, which won't produce the correct texture. Starting with a fresh can of foam shaving cream and a different laundry detergent brand typically resolves this issue. Contact lens solution is an alternative activator if laundry detergent isn't working in your situation.

If your cloud slime deflates or becomes flat after a few hours, this is normal for some recipes. Cloud slime naturally loses some of its fluffiness over time as the air bubbles escape. You can re-fluff the slime by stretching and kneading it vigorously for several minutes, which reintroduces air into the mixture. Storing cloud slime in an airtight container slows deflation significantly compared to leaving it exposed to air.
