Understanding Why Dentures Get Stuck

Dentures can become stuck for several physical and environmental reasons. The most common cause is suction—when a denture creates an airtight seal against the gums, it becomes difficult to remove. This happens because the denture base forms a tight contact with the underlying tissues, and breaking that seal requires knowing the right technique.

Saliva plays a significant role in denture retention. When saliva acts as an adhesive between the denture and the gum tissue, removal becomes harder. Some people naturally produce more saliva than others, which can increase sticking. Additionally, if dentures are left in the mouth for extended periods without adjustment or if the fit has changed over time, the suction effect intensifies.

Swelling of the gums can also trap dentures. This swelling may result from inflammation, allergic reactions to denture materials, or oral thrush—a fungal infection common in denture wearers. When tissues swell, they conform more tightly around the denture base, making removal challenging.

Denture material itself matters. Acrylic dentures, which are most common, can develop microscopic irregularities or become warped with age, changing their fit and how they interact with gum tissue. Dentures that have been worn for many years may fit differently than they did when new.

Understanding these causes helps prevent future sticking. Regular denture maintenance, proper cleaning, and periodic dental checkups can identify fit problems before they cause removal difficulties. Keeping dentures properly fitted through professional adjustments reduces the likelihood of them becoming stuck in the first place.

Practical Takeaway: Stuck dentures are usually caused by suction, saliva adhesion, or gum swelling—not by damage to the denture or mouth. Recognizing these causes helps you address the problem calmly and methodically.

Preparation Steps Before Attempting Removal

Before trying to remove stuck dentures, taking time to prepare reduces the risk of injury to your gums and denture. Start by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Clean hands prevent introducing bacteria into your mouth and give you better grip control. Dry your hands with a clean towel.

Sit in a well-lit area, ideally near a mirror or with good lighting directed at your mouth. You need to see what you're doing to avoid accidentally damaging soft tissues. Some people find it helpful to sit over a towel or basin—dentures may suddenly pop free and fall, and catching them prevents breakage.

Relax your facial muscles and jaw. Tension makes removal harder because your muscles naturally hold the denture in place. Take several slow, deep breaths before attempting anything. This calms your nervous system and loosens the muscles around your mouth and jaw.

Have water nearby. You may need to rinse your mouth, dampen your fingertips for better grip, or sip water to moisten your mouth if it feels very dry. Some people find that rinsing with warm water helps relax tissues slightly.

If you wear upper and lower dentures, decide which one to address first. Many people find lower dentures harder to remove because they have less surface area and create a strong suction seal. However, starting with the upper denture sometimes reduces pressure and makes the lower one easier to remove afterward.

Gather any tools you might need: a denture brush, a soft cloth, or a suction cup designed specifically for denture removal (available at pharmacies). Having these items within reach means you won't need to interrupt the process to search for them.

Practical Takeaway: Proper preparation—clean hands, good lighting, relaxation, and nearby water—sets up successful denture removal and protects your mouth from injury.

Safe Removal Techniques for Upper Dentures

Removing upper dentures requires breaking the suction seal that holds them in place. The most effective method involves locating the seal and deliberately creating an air gap. Start by placing your thumbs on the roof of your mouth, just behind where your front teeth are. Press your thumbs upward and slightly toward the back of your mouth. This motion applies gentle pressure that can break the suction.

Once you feel the seal beginning to separate, rock the denture gently from side to side using small movements. Don't twist forcefully; the goal is to allow air to enter between the denture and your gum tissue. As air enters, the suction weakens significantly. You may hear a slight sound as the seal breaks—this is normal.

Another effective technique involves using your index fingers on the inside of the denture (the side touching your mouth). Place both fingers along the midline of the roof of your mouth, directly under the denture. Press gently downward and forward simultaneously. This creates leverage that separates the denture from the palate.

If the denture still feels stuck, try inserting a fingernail or soft plastic tool (like the edge of a denture brush handle) between the denture edge and your gum at the seam. Apply gentle, steady pressure rather than jabbing motions. Move slowly around the edge of the denture, creating multiple small air gaps instead of trying to force one large opening.

Never pull straight down on upper dentures with force. This can damage the palate tissues and cause bleeding or bruising. Always use rocking, gentle prying, or pressure-based techniques rather than direct pulling force.

Some denture wearers use denture removal cups—small suction cups that adhere to the top of the denture and provide a handle for controlled removal. These tools cost between five and fifteen dollars and can be particularly useful for people with limited hand strength or dexterity.

Practical Takeaway: Upper dentures release by breaking suction through gentle rocking, upward thumb pressure, or careful prying—never through forceful pulling.

Safe Removal Techniques for Lower Dentures

Lower dentures present different challenges than upper dentures because they rest on a horseshoe-shaped area and have less surface contact. However, they still create strong suction that can make removal difficult. The basic principle remains the same: break the seal to release suction.

Begin by placing your thumbs under the front of the lower denture, inside your mouth. Position them on the inside surface of the denture at the gum line, where the denture meets the tissue beneath your lower front teeth. Press gently upward and forward simultaneously. This motion lifts the front of the denture slightly and breaks suction at that critical point.

Once the front lifts, rock the denture gently from side to side using small, controlled movements. This allows air to enter around the sides. As the seal weakens, continue the rocking motion, gradually increasing the angle until you can slide the denture out.

An alternative method involves using your index fingers to locate the junction between the denture and your lower gum at the sides. Press gently inward and slightly downward at these points. This creates multiple small air gaps that collectively weaken the overall seal. Work slowly around both sides rather than forcing one spot.

Some people find success using a gentle wiggling motion rather than rocking. Place your fingers at the front edge of the lower denture, and move it back and forth in very small movements—think of the motion you'd use to loosen a slightly stuck drawer. This gradual loosening eventually allows air to penetrate the seal.

If your lower denture uses implants or dental attachments, removal techniques may differ slightly. Consult the documentation provided by your dentist for specific instructions related to your denture type.

Never attempt to pry lower dentures forcefully from the back of your mouth or apply leverage that pulls directly downward. The lower jaw's bone structure is more delicate than the upper palate, and aggressive removal can cause injury to the underlying ridge or gum tissues.

Practical Takeaway: Lower dentures release through gentle upward-forward pressure on the front combined with rocking or wiggling—not through brute force or pulling from the back.

What To Do If Dentures Remain Stuck

Sometimes dentures don't respond to standard removal techniques. If your dentures remain firmly stuck after several careful attempts, stop trying and assess the situation. Continued forceful efforts risk tissue damage, so knowing when to pause and try different approaches prevents injury.
