Update Your Business Address on Google Guide

Understanding Why Your Business Address Needs Updates on Google

Google Business Profile serves as a digital storefront for millions of businesses worldwide. When customers search for your company online, Google pulls information from your business profile to display your address, phone number, hours, and other key details. Having accurate location information matters because potential customers rely on it to find you, contact you, and determine whether you're open when they want to visit.

Your business address on Google may need updating for several reasons. You might have relocated to a new physical location. Your building number or street name could have changed due to municipal updates. You may have added a second location or closed one. Sometimes Google's systems contain outdated information from old listings or data sources. Other times, a competitor or unauthorized person may have edited your information, which happens more frequently than many business owners realize.

When your address information on Google is incorrect or outdated, several problems can occur. Customers may visit your old location and find your business gone, leaving them frustrated and less likely to search for your correct location. Navigation apps may direct people to the wrong address, causing them to arrive at neighboring buildings or completely different areas. This confusion can result in lost sales, negative customer reviews mentioning wrong addresses, and reduced foot traffic to your actual location.

Keeping your Google Business Profile current connects you with local customers actively searching for your products or services. Google's search algorithm gives preference to businesses with complete, accurate information when displaying local results. A business with a verified current address typically ranks higher in local searches than one with missing or incorrect details. This means updating your address isn't just about correction—it's about maintaining your visibility in your community.

Practical Takeaway: Audit your business's current information on Google today by searching your business name. Compare what appears with your actual business address, phone number, and hours. Note any discrepancies you find, as these will need correction.

How to Access Your Google Business Profile

Before you can update your address, you need to locate and access your Google Business Profile. Start by going to google.com/business on your web browser. This is Google's official portal where business owners manage their online presence. You'll see a sign-in area where you can enter your Google account credentials. If you don't have a Google account, you'll need to create one first—this takes just a few minutes and is free.

Once you're signed in, Google will display any existing business profiles associated with your account. If you've already claimed your business listing, you'll see it listed here. If your business has multiple locations, each one will appear as a separate entry. Click on the business profile you want to edit. This opens the main profile dashboard where you can view and modify all your business information, including your address.

If you don't see your business listed, this could mean several things. Your business may not have a Google Business Profile yet—you may need to create one. Your business might be listed under a different name than you're searching for. Sometimes older listings use outdated business names or variations. You can search for your business using different name formats you've used over time. Another possibility is that you created the profile but haven't accessed it in a long time and the account became inactive.

If you can't locate your existing profile, Google offers a search function within the Business Profile platform. You can search by your business name, address, or phone number. Google will show you any profiles it has on file that match these details. When you find the correct profile, you can claim it if you haven't already. Claiming means verifying to Google that you actually own or manage this business, which gives you official editing rights.

Practical Takeaway: Visit google.com/business right now and sign in with your Google account. Search for your business by name and note exactly how it appears in Google's system. This ensures you're working on the correct profile before making any changes.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Updating Your Address

Once you're inside your Google Business Profile dashboard, updating your address follows a straightforward process. On the left side of your profile page, you'll see a menu with various options including "Info." Click on "Info" to access the section containing your business details. This page displays your current address, phone number, website, and other key information. Look for the address field—it typically shows your street address, city, state, and ZIP code.

Click directly on the address field to edit it. Google will open a text entry box where you can modify your address information. Delete the old address completely and type in your new address. Be precise with this entry—include the street number, street name, apartment or suite number if applicable, city, state, and ZIP code. Google uses this information to place your business on maps and ensure customers receive correct navigation directions.

As you type your new address, Google's system will likely show you matching suggestions based on its database. These autocomplete suggestions help ensure Google recognizes your address correctly. Select the correct suggestion from the dropdown list if your address appears. If Google doesn't suggest your address, you can continue typing it exactly as it should appear. After entering your complete new address, look for a "Save" button or checkmark icon to confirm your changes.

Google typically requires you to verify address changes, especially if you've moved to a significantly different location. The verification process protects against unauthorized changes to business profiles. Google may send you a postcard to your new business address containing a verification code. This usually arrives within 5-10 business days. When it arrives, you'll enter this code on your Google Business Profile to confirm you truly operate at that address. Until you complete this verification, your old address may still appear in some Google search results, though your profile will show you're pending verification.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your complete new address before you begin editing—including street number, suite number, city, state, and ZIP code. Having this information ready prevents typing errors and speeds up the updating process.

Understanding the Verification Process

Google requires verification when you update your business address to prevent fraud and ensure accurate local business information. This verification step proves to Google that you actually operate at the address you claim. Without verification, changes to critical information like your address won't fully take effect across all Google services. Understanding how verification works helps you complete this step smoothly.

After you submit your new address, Google will display a message explaining that your business address change is pending verification. The primary verification method is a postcard sent to your new business address. This postcard contains a unique PIN code that only someone at your physical location would receive. Google typically processes these postcards within 5-10 business days, though delivery times can vary based on location and postal service efficiency.

When your verification postcard arrives, open it carefully and locate the PIN number. Return to your Google Business Profile on google.com/business. Navigate back to your Info section. You should see a prompt asking you to verify your address. Click this prompt and enter the PIN from your postcard. Once you submit the correct PIN, Google updates your profile to show your new address as verified, and this information syncs across Google Maps, Google Search, and other Google services.

If you don't receive your verification postcard after 14 days, Google offers alternative verification methods for certain situations. Some business types may be able to use alternative verification like a phone call or video call where a Google representative confirms your location. Businesses operating from home addresses may face additional restrictions. Check your Google Business Profile dashboard for information about alternative verification options available for your specific business type and location.

Practical Takeaway: After submitting your address change, add a reminder to your calendar for 7-10 days from now to watch for your verification postcard. Keep this postcard in a safe place until you've entered the PIN, in case you need the code again.

What to Do If You Have Multiple Locations

Businesses with multiple physical locations—such as restaurant chains, retail stores with branches, or service providers covering multiple areas—need to manage separate Google Business Profiles for each location. This structure allows customers in different areas to find the specific location nearest to them with accurate information for that branch. If your business operates from multiple addresses, updating becomes slightly more complex but remains manageable through your Google Business Profile dashboard.

When you sign into your Google Business Profile, you'll see a location switcher at the top of your dashboard if you manage multiple locations. This typically shows your primary location with options to select other locations from a dropdown menu or list. To update the address for a specific location, select that location from the switcher first. This ensures you're editing the correct profile. Only update one location's information at a time to
