Learn Small Block Chevy Casting Codes Guide

Understanding Small Block Chevy Casting Numbers and Their Location

Small Block Chevrolet engines have been produced since 1955, and manufacturers stamped casting codes into various engine components to track production details. These codes appear on engine blocks, cylinder heads, intake manifolds, and other cast iron parts. Learning to read these codes helps you identify the exact year of manufacture, the foundry that produced the part, and sometimes the original application.

Casting numbers are different from part numbers. A casting number identifies when and where a specific component was manufactured, while a part number is a catalog designation used by Chevrolet for ordering purposes. The casting number is typically found in raised or indented letters on the casting itself, making it a permanent identifier that cannot be changed or removed without damaging the part.

On the engine block, casting numbers usually appear on the passenger side of the block near the oil filter area, or on the front of the block just below the cylinder head surface. On cylinder heads, you'll find them on the intake side, typically near the spark plug holes or on the underside. Intake manifolds have their casting codes stamped on the underside or on the sides. These locations were chosen by Chevrolet engineers to be relatively hidden from view once the engine was installed in a vehicle.

The casting codes often consist of a letter prefix followed by numbers. For example, a code like "3970010" or "L0234556" tells a specific story about that component. The letter typically indicates the foundry or plant location, while the numbers represent the specific part design and production date. Some codes include additional information about casting variations or engineering changes made during production.

Understanding where to locate these codes is the first step in identifying your engine components. Taking clear photographs of the casting numbers before you begin any engine work allows you to reference them later or share them with other enthusiasts who can help with identification. Always clean the area around the casting code before attempting to read it, as accumulated dirt, grease, and corrosion can make the numbers difficult to see.

Practical Takeaway: Locate and photograph all visible casting codes on your Small Block Chevy components before disassembly. Document their exact locations on the block, heads, and intake manifold to create a reference record of your engine's manufacturing details.

Decoding Engine Block Casting Numbers and Production Years

The Small Block Chevrolet engine block casting codes reveal important information about when the block was manufactured and what foundry produced it. Most Small Block blocks from the 1960s and 1970s use a letter-number combination system. The first character is typically a letter representing the foundry, followed by numbers that indicate the specific casting and approximate production date.

Foundry letters appear consistently throughout Chevrolet casting history. For example, blocks marked with "A" typically came from the Tonawanda, New York foundry, while "F" often indicated the Flint, Michigan facility. Other common foundry codes include "D" for Danville, Illinois, and "M" for Massena, New York. Knowing the foundry helps collectors and engine builders understand the origin and potential quality variations of their components, as different facilities sometimes had slightly different casting procedures and material specifications.

The numerical portion of the block casting code usually appears in a format like "3970010" or similar. The first digits often relate to the basic block design and year range. For instance, blocks cast in 1968 might have a different number prefix than those cast in 1972, even if they're the same displacement engine. Within a single year, multiple casting variations could exist as Chevrolet refined designs or made engineering improvements.

Dating a Small Block block using casting numbers is not always precise to an exact year. Instead, these codes typically narrow down production to a range spanning one to three years. A 1969 block casting code might have been used for both 1969 and 1970 model years. To pin down the exact year more precisely, you often need to combine the casting code information with other details like the engine's VIN tag, if still present, or the vehicle's documentation.

Some early Small Block blocks from 1955-1962 have simpler casting codes with fewer digits. As production continued and engines became more complex, the casting code systems became more detailed. By the late 1960s, most blocks included additional information about displacement, specific applications, and revision levels within a single basic design.

Practical Takeaway: Create a reference guide matching your block's casting code to published Small Block Chevy databases. Cross-reference the foundry letter with the numerical portion to establish a production date range, then use that information to verify whether your block matches your vehicle's model year designation.

Cylinder Head Casting Codes and Identification

Cylinder heads represent one of the most important casting number resources for Small Block Chevy identification. Heads went through numerous revisions throughout the production years, with each major design change receiving a new casting number. The differences between early closed-chamber heads, rectangular-port heads, and later open-chamber designs are all traceable through casting codes.

The casting number on a cylinder head typically appears on the intake manifold surface, either on top between cylinders or on the sides of the head. You might also find casting codes on the underside where the head mates to the block. These locations made sense from a manufacturing perspective, as they were exposed to the casting process and didn't interfere with machining operations.

Early Small Block heads from 1955-1964 often feature closed-chamber designs with smaller combustion chambers. These heads carry casting numbers like "3782461" or similar designations beginning with "3" or "4". Moving into the mid-to-late 1960s, Chevrolet introduced rectangular-port heads designed for better flow and performance. These heads have distinctly different casting numbers that collectors can identify. The rectangular-port design became the standard for many years and is still popular in engine rebuilding today.

By the 1970s and into the 1980s, emissions regulations drove changes in cylinder head design. Heads became more conservative in chamber volume and port design. Casting numbers from this era often include additional information about emission compliance. Understanding which casting code represents which head design is crucial for engine builders who want to match components for optimal performance or authenticity.

The casting code alone doesn't tell you the exact production date of a cylinder head, but it does tell you the design series and approximate era. A rectangular-port head from the late 1960s will have a different casting number than an early closed-chamber head, even though both might fit on certain Small Block blocks. Matching the head design to the block design requires understanding what combinations Chevrolet actually used in production vehicles.

Many cylinder heads show two or three different casting numbers on the same head. This occurs when a head receives engineering revisions—Chevrolet would stamp a new number to indicate the change. These revision codes help determine whether you have an early production head or a later improved version of the same basic design.

Practical Takeaway: Document all casting codes visible on your cylinder heads, including any revision stamps. Reference these against Small Block Chevy head identification charts to determine whether you have closed-chamber, rectangular-port, or open-chamber designs, which directly affects engine performance and authenticity.

Intake Manifold Casting Numbers and Variations

Intake manifolds carry casting codes that identify their specific design and production timeline. These codes appear on the underside of the manifold or sometimes on the sides, stamped into the cast iron during the manufacturing process. Understanding intake manifold casting codes matters because manifold design affects engine performance, fuel distribution, and overall compatibility with other engine components.

Small Block intake manifolds evolved significantly from 1955 through the 1980s. Early cast-iron single-plane manifolds differ substantially from dual-plane designs introduced later. Each major design change received new casting numbers, allowing you to identify exactly which manifold design you have. Single-plane manifolds direct all cylinders' intake passages into one central area, promoting good flow but creating less effective torque distribution. Dual-plane manifolds split the intake runners, with one side feeding cylinders 1, 2, 7, 8 and the other side feeding 3, 4, 5, 6, creating better torque characteristics across a broader RPM range.

Chevrolet continued developing intake manifold designs throughout Small Block production. Some manifolds were specifically designed for certain vehicle applications. A manifold intended for a full-size sedan might have different port shapes and flow characteristics than one designed
