Learn How to Use Your PrePass Account
Understanding PrePass and How the Account System Works
PrePass is a toll management system used by commercial truck drivers across North America. The system allows drivers to pay tolls electronically as they pass through toll plazas, rather than stopping to pay in cash or at a booth. PrePass operates in 37 U.S. states and several Canadian provinces, processing millions of toll transactions annually.

The PrePass account is the foundation for using this service. When you create an account, you establish a profile that connects to your vehicle information and payment method. The account stores your preferences, transaction history, and billing details. This centralized system means you don't need separate accounts for different toll roads or regions—one PrePass account works across the entire network of participating toll facilities.
PrePass uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to communicate with toll plaza equipment. When your vehicle equipped with a PrePass transponder approaches a toll plaza, the system reads your account information and automatically processes the toll. The transponder is a small device mounted on your windshield that transmits your account data to the toll collection equipment.
Understanding how your account connects to your transponder and payment method is important because problems in any of these areas can affect your ability to pay tolls. Your account contains settings that determine how tolls are charged, which payment method receives the bill, and what notifications you receive about transactions. Many drivers find that managing these settings proactively prevents issues down the road.
Practical Takeaway: Before setting up a PrePass account, gather your commercial driver information, company details (if applicable), vehicle registration documents, and a valid payment method. Having these items ready will make the account creation process faster and more straightforward.
Setting Up Your PrePass Account Step by Step
Creating a PrePass account begins on the PrePass website at www.prepass.com. You'll look for the option to create a new account, typically found on the home page. The system will ask you to choose between a personal driver account or a fleet account. Personal driver accounts are for individual commercial drivers, while fleet accounts are for companies managing multiple vehicles and drivers.

The account creation process requires you to provide personal information including your name, address, phone number, and email address. You'll also need to provide your commercial driver's license number and state of issuance. This information helps PrePass verify that you're a legitimate commercial driver. Have your CDL available when starting the process—you'll need the exact number and state information.
Next, you'll enter your vehicle information. This includes the vehicle identification number (VIN), license plate number, vehicle type, and gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). If you have multiple vehicles, you can register each one to your account. PrePass uses this information to link your account to your specific vehicle when your transponder sends identification signals at toll plazas.
Payment method setup is a critical step. PrePass accepts credit cards and electronic bank account payments through an Automated Clearing House (ACH) connection. When you register your payment method, you authorize PrePass to charge tolls to that account. You can change your payment method later if needed. Be aware that some payment methods may have different processing times for charges to appear on your statement.
After entering all required information, you'll review a summary of your account details before submitting. PrePass will send a confirmation email to the address you provided. This email contains important information about your account status and next steps. Save this email for your records, as you may need to reference it when ordering your transponder.
Practical Takeaway: Write down your PrePass account username and password in a secure location. You'll need these credentials to log in and manage your account, order transponders, and view your transaction history. Consider using a password manager to store this information securely.
Ordering and Activating Your Transponder Device
Once your account is created, you need to order a transponder—the physical device that communicates with toll plazas. You can order your transponder through your PrePass account dashboard. Log in to your account, navigate to the transponder section, and select the option to order a new device. PrePass typically charges a one-time transponder fee, usually between $25 and $35 depending on the device type.

PrePass offers different types of transponders. The standard RFID transponder is the most common and works at most toll facilities across the network. Some facilities also support video tolling, which uses license plate recognition as a backup if your transponder malfunctions. When ordering, you can specify how many transponders you need and which vehicles they'll be mounted in.
After you place your order, PrePass mails the transponder to your address. Delivery typically takes 5 to 10 business days, though this can vary based on your location and current processing volumes. The package will include the transponder device, mounting hardware, detailed instructions for installation, and information about configuring it with your account.
When your transponder arrives, follow the included instructions to mount it on your vehicle's windshield. The transponder needs to be positioned in a specific location—usually on the passenger side of the windshield—to communicate properly with toll plaza equipment. The instructions will show you exactly where to place it. Clean the windshield thoroughly before mounting to ensure the adhesive sticks securely.
The transponder becomes linked to your account automatically once it's installed and you drive through a toll plaza. The first toll transaction you make will register the transponder with your account. After that, all subsequent tolls will be charged to your registered payment method. If you don't use your transponder within a certain period, PrePass may send you a notice asking you to confirm you still plan to use the account.
Practical Takeaway: Keep the mounting instructions and transponder documentation in your vehicle or driver folder. If you need to replace your transponder or transfer it to a different vehicle, you'll have the reference information you need. Also, take a photo of your installed transponder for your records.
Managing Your Account Online and Monitoring Transactions
Your PrePass account dashboard is where you manage most aspects of your service. After logging in to www.prepass.com with your username and password, you'll see your account overview. This page typically displays your current account balance, recent transactions, and any alerts or messages from PrePass about your account.

The transaction history section shows every toll charge processed through your account. Each entry includes the date, time, location of the toll plaza, and the amount charged. You can filter transactions by date range to find specific tolls or to reconcile charges with your records. This is useful if you need to verify that tolls match your route or if you want to dispute a charge.
Most PrePass accounts allow you to view detailed transaction information, which includes the road or highway where the toll occurred and your entry and exit points. This level of detail can help you verify that charges are accurate and identify any processing errors. If you notice a toll you don't recognize, you can contact PrePass customer service to investigate.
Your account settings section allows you to update personal information, change your payment method, manage multiple transponders, and configure notification preferences. You can choose to receive email notifications when tolls are charged, alerts if your payment method fails, or monthly transaction summaries. Many drivers find that regular email notifications help them track spending and catch any unusual activity immediately.
You can also manage multiple vehicles through your account. If you have different transponders for different trucks or if you switch between vehicles, you can assign each transponder to the appropriate vehicle in your account settings. This helps PrePass track which vehicle incurred which toll and provides you with organized transaction records by vehicle.
If you need to temporarily suspend your account—for example, if your vehicle is out of service—you can request a suspension through your account settings. This prevents tolls from being processed if your vehicle accidentally passes through a toll plaza during the suspension period. You can reactivate your account when your vehicle is back in service.
Practical Takeaway: Set aside time each week or month to review your PrePass transaction history. This regular practice helps you spot billing errors quickly, track your fuel and transportation costs, and maintain accurate records for business expense reporting or tax purposes.
Troubleshooting Common Account Issues
One of the most common issues drivers encounter is a failed payment method. This happens when your credit card expires, the card is reported lost or stolen, or your bank account information changes. When a payment fails, PrePass sends a notification to your email address. You need to log into your account and
