Learn How to Change Your Walmart Password Guide
Understanding Your Walmart Account and Password Basics
Your Walmart account serves as your gateway to online shopping, order tracking, and accessing your purchase history. Whether you shop on Walmart.com or use the Walmart mobile application, your password acts as the primary security measure protecting your personal information, payment methods, and delivery addresses. Understanding the importance of a strong password is the first step toward maintaining account security.

A password is essentially a combination of characters that only you should know. When you create an account with Walmart, you establish a password during the registration process. This password must meet certain requirements set by Walmart to ensure adequate security. Typically, these requirements include a minimum length (often 8 characters or more), and may require a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters like exclamation points or dollar signs.
Your Walmart password differs from your PIN (personal identification number) used at physical store locations. The online password specifically protects your digital account and the information stored there. This separation means changing one does not affect the other. Many people create multiple accounts across different websites, making password management an ongoing concern. The reality is that most people struggle to remember complex passwords for numerous accounts, which is why some choose to use password management tools or keep written records in secure locations.
Walmart updates its security requirements periodically to protect against evolving threats. These updates may include changes to password complexity rules or security verification steps. Understanding that your password may need updating not just for forgotten credentials but also for security improvements helps you stay informed about account maintenance.
Practical Takeaway: Before attempting to change your password, write down what device you'll be using (phone, tablet, or computer) and ensure you have access to the email address associated with your Walmart account. This preparation makes the process smoother.
Accessing the Password Change Settings on Walmart.com
The process of changing your Walmart password begins with accessing your account settings through the website. Navigate to Walmart.com and look for the account or sign-in area, typically located in the upper right corner of the page. Most websites place this in a prominent location so customers can quickly reach their profile information. On Walmart's website, you'll see options for signing in if you're not already logged into your account.

If you're already signed in to your Walmart account, the account menu may display your name or an icon representing your profile. Clicking this will open a dropdown menu with various options. These options typically include viewing your account, managing settings, checking orders, and accessing customer service. The specific wording may vary, but you're looking for options related to "Account," "Profile," "Settings," or "My Account." This is where password management typically lives.
For those not currently signed in, you'll need to enter your email address or username and your current password to log in first. Walmart may offer options to sign in using email, phone number, or other identifiers depending on how you created your original account. Once you've logged in successfully, the account settings menu becomes available to you. The platform will show that you're signed in through various visual indicators such as displaying your name or showing a personalized greeting.
The website interface may look different depending on whether you're using a desktop computer, tablet, or mobile browser. Desktop versions often have a clearer navigation menu, while mobile versions may use a "hamburger menu" (three horizontal lines) to conserve screen space. Regardless of the device, the fundamental structure remains similar—you're looking for an account or settings section that contains personal information management options.
Practical Takeaway: Screenshot or bookmark the direct path to your account settings (usually something like your name dropdown menu) so you can find it quickly on future visits. This saves time if you ever need to access these settings again.
Locating and Selecting the Password Change Option
Once you've accessed your account settings menu, you'll need to locate the specific option for changing your password. Different website designs organize this information in various ways, but the terminology is usually consistent. Look for phrases such as "Change Password," "Update Password," "Password Settings," "Security," or "Login and Security." Some accounts group password management under a broader "Security Settings" category that may also include two-factor authentication or other verification methods.

Walmart's account settings page typically displays multiple options related to your profile. You might see sections for personal information (like your name and address), communication preferences (email and phone notifications), payment methods, and security settings. The password change option is usually found in the security or account settings area. Reading through the available options carefully prevents you from accidentally clicking on unrelated settings.
When you click on the password change option, the system will prompt you to verify your identity for security reasons. This verification step is standard practice across reputable websites and protects your account from unauthorized changes. Walmart may ask you to confirm your current password before allowing you to create a new one. Some platforms also offer alternative verification methods such as confirming a code sent to your email address or phone number. This two-step verification process ensures that someone with access to your email or phone cannot simply change your password without knowing the current one.
The interface for changing your password is typically straightforward and user-friendly. You'll generally see fields for your current password and then two fields for your new password (often requiring you to type it twice to confirm you've entered it correctly). The reason websites ask you to enter a new password twice is to reduce the chance of typos. A single typo in your password could lock you out of your account, so this verification step protects you.
Practical Takeaway: Before clicking the password change option, have a new password ready. Think of something you can remember but that includes a mix of character types (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols). Writing it down temporarily in a secure location helps during the change process.
Step-by-Step Process for Entering Your New Password
The actual password change process involves several sequential steps designed to protect your account. First, you'll be asked to enter your current password. This confirms that you are indeed the account holder and not someone who has temporarily gained access to your device. Type your current password carefully into the designated field. Many password entry fields hide your typing by displaying dots or asterisks instead of the actual characters—this is a security feature to prevent others from seeing your password if they're looking over your shoulder.

After confirming your current password, you'll move to entering your new password. Here's where you'll input the new password you've created. Walmart's system will typically display any requirements your new password must meet. These requirements might include minimum character length (such as at least 8 characters), requirements for uppercase and lowercase letters, inclusion of at least one number, and inclusion of at least one special character. As you type your new password, you may see a strength indicator that shows whether your password is considered weak, medium, or strong based on these criteria.
You'll then need to confirm your new password by typing it again in a second field. This confirmation field serves as a safeguard against typos. Since passwords are hidden as you type them, it's easy to make mistakes. Entering the password twice and requiring both entries to match catches these errors before your password is changed. If the two entries don't match, the system will prompt you to re-enter them. This might feel slightly inconvenient, but it prevents you from being locked out of your account due to a typing error.
Before submitting the password change, review any security questions or additional information the system might ask. Some accounts use security questions as an additional verification layer. These questions might ask about personal information you provided when creating your account, such as your mother's maiden name or your favorite pet's name. Walmart may or may not use this additional layer depending on your account settings. Once you've filled in all required fields correctly, look for a "Save," "Update," "Change Password," or "Confirm" button to submit your changes.
Practical Takeaway: Create your new password on a separate document or notepad before you begin the password change process. This way, you can reference it while entering it twice without having to rely on memory. Delete the temporary document once the change is complete.
Using the Walmart Mobile App to Change Your Password
If you primarily shop using the Walmart mobile application rather than the website, you can change your password directly through the app. The process is similar to the website version but adapted for mobile screens. Open the Walmart app on your device and navigate to your account section. On mobile apps, this is typically represented by a person icon, a profile icon, or text saying "Account" or "My Account." This button is usually located at
