Learn How to Build a Simple Platformer Game

Understanding the Fundamentals of Platformer Game Design

A platformer game is a video game where the main character moves across levels by jumping between platforms, avoiding obstacles, and collecting items. The genre has roots dating back to 1981 with Donkey Kong, which introduced the core mechanic of jumping to reach higher areas. Today, platformers remain popular across all gaming platforms, from mobile devices to professional gaming consoles. Understanding platformer basics helps you recognize what makes these games engaging for players.

The essential elements of a platformer include a player character, platforms to stand on, gravity that pulls the character downward, and obstacles or enemies to avoid. Most platformers feature a goal—such as reaching the end of a level or collecting a certain number of items—that gives players something to work toward. The challenge typically increases gradually, meaning early levels teach basic skills while later levels demand precision and timing.

Platformers teach players about spatial reasoning and timing. When you play or create a platformer, you're working with concepts like distance, height, speed, and momentum. A character jumping from one platform to another must travel the correct distance in the air before landing. This physics-based thinking applies to many professional fields, including engineering and animation.

• Platformers typically feature colorful graphics and reward player skill with progression
• The genre includes variations like side-scrolling, isometric, and 3D platformers
• Classic examples include Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mega Man
• Modern platformers often combine traditional mechanics with new ideas, such as wall-running or swinging

Practical Takeaway: Before building your platformer, play several existing platformer games across different styles. Notice how early levels teach you basic controls, how difficulty increases, and what makes certain moments feel rewarding or frustrating. This observation will inform better design choices for your own game.

Choosing the Right Game Engine and Tools

A game engine is software that handles the technical aspects of game creation, including graphics, physics, sound, and input controls. Choosing the right engine significantly impacts how quickly you can develop your platformer and how much programming knowledge you need. Several free and paid engines exist, each with different strengths.

Unity is one of the most widely-used game engines, supporting 2D and 3D development across platforms like PC, mobile, and consoles. Unity uses a visual editor where you can arrange game elements without writing code, though it also supports programming for advanced features. Unity's Asset Store contains thousands of pre-made components, art assets, and example projects that can speed up development. The engine is free for personal projects and small studios, making it accessible for beginners.

Godot is another free, open-source engine that has gained popularity for 2D platformers specifically. It uses its own programming language called GDScript, which shares similarities with Python, making it relatively learner-friendly. Godot's file system and scene structure work well for platformer development, and the community has created many platformer tutorials using the engine.

Unreal Engine offers powerful tools for both 2D and 3D games, though it traditionally requires more computer resources than alternatives. Game Maker Studio is specifically designed for 2D games and includes built-in platformer physics, making it another solid choice for platformer creation. Scratch is a visual programming platform that introduces game development concepts through block-based programming, suitable for learning fundamental ideas before moving to professional engines.

• Unity: Best for multi-platform development; large community; extensive documentation
• Godot: Lightweight; excellent for 2D; smaller learning curve
• Game Maker Studio: Specialized for 2D; good platformer support; moderate cost
• Unreal Engine: Powerful visuals; steeper learning curve; higher system requirements
• Scratch: Best for absolute beginners; visual programming; limited for complex games

Practical Takeaway: Download and explore two different engines before committing to one. Create a simple scene with a moving character in each. This hands-on comparison will reveal which interface and workflow feels more intuitive to you, which matters more than which engine is technically "best."

Setting Up Player Movement and Jump Mechanics

Player movement is the foundation of any platformer. The player character needs to move left and right in response to keyboard or controller input, and jump when the player presses a jump button. These seemingly simple actions involve several layers of technical considerations that affect how the game feels to play.

Horizontal movement requires detecting when the player presses left or right arrow keys (or other directional inputs), then applying movement force to the character in that direction. Most engines handle this through input detection systems that continuously check for active key presses. A typical implementation involves storing the player's horizontal velocity and updating their position each frame based on that velocity. To prevent the character from moving infinitely off-screen, you set maximum speed limits.

Jumping introduces gravity and vertical velocity. When the player presses jump, the character gains upward velocity that gradually decreases due to gravity pulling downward. The character stops ascending and begins falling when vertical velocity reaches zero. The height and feel of the jump depends on the initial upward velocity and the strength of gravity. A stronger initial velocity produces higher jumps, while stronger gravity makes jumps feel shorter and snappier. Most platformers allow players to jump only when the character is standing on a platform, detected by checking if the character touches ground below them.

An important refinement is variable jump height. In many platformers, holding the jump button longer produces a higher jump, while tapping it briefly produces a shorter jump. This mechanic gives players more control and makes the game feel more responsive. You implement this by checking how long the jump button remains pressed and gradually reducing upward velocity while the button is held.

• Use a grounded check to determine if the player is touching a platform
• Apply horizontal velocity when movement keys are pressed
• Apply downward gravity every frame to simulate falling
• Implement variable jump height for better player control
• Add friction or deceleration to make movement feel responsive
• Clamp (limit) velocities to prevent unrealistic movement speeds

Practical Takeaway: Create a basic level with a single platform and spend time adjusting the jump height, gravity, and movement speed. Record small video clips with different settings. Watch these clips back-to-back to feel how adjustments change the game's "feel." Even small changes make significant differences in how satisfying the movement becomes.

Designing Levels and Platforms

Level design determines whether your platformer feels engaging or frustrating. Good platformer levels introduce new challenges gradually, teach players through experience rather than instructions, and provide moments of satisfaction when players overcome obstacles. Poor level design leads to frustration, confusion, and abandoned games.

Start with your first level teaching basic movement. The opening section should have simple, wide platforms that are impossible to miss jumping between. Players should get comfortable with controls before encountering any real challenge. Introduce the first small obstacle or gap after players have successfully jumped several times. This teaches players that gaps exist without punishing them harshly for misjudging distance.

Difficulty progression means gradually increasing the demands placed on players. After mastering basic jumping, introduce smaller platforms that require more precise landing. Then add platforms at different heights, requiring players to judge both horizontal and vertical distance. Introduce moving platforms after players understand stationary ones. Add enemies or obstacles only after players are confident in core mechanics. A well-paced platformer might spend several levels teaching concepts that experienced players could learn in one level—this isn't inefficient, it's inclusive design that accommodates players of different skill levels.

Level layouts use three primary approaches. Linear levels have a clear path from start to finish with one main direction to progress, like moving right across platforms. These work well for beginners and maintain focus. Non-linear levels give players multiple paths to reach the goal, allowing skilled players to find shortcuts while less skilled players take longer routes. Branching levels have decision points where players choose which path to follow, adding replayability. Most successful platformers mix these approaches across different levels.

Visual clarity matters significantly. Players should immediately understand which surfaces they can stand on and which are obstacles. Use consistent colors or patterns for platforms, enemies, sp
