Learn About Updating Your TSA PreCheck Name Record
Understanding TSA PreCheck and Name Changes
TSA PreCheck is a trusted traveler program run by the Transportation Security Administration that allows certain travelers to go through security screening more quickly at participating U.S. airports. When you enroll in TSA PreCheck, you provide personal information including your legal name, which gets stored in the TSA's system. This name is what appears on your Known Traveler Number (KTN) and is used to match against your airline reservation and identification documents at the airport.

Life circumstances often require name changes. People change their names through marriage, divorce, legal name change petitions, or other personal reasons. If you have TSA PreCheck and your legal name has changed, you'll need to update this information in your TSA PreCheck record. Without updating your name, you may encounter problems at airport security when your KTN doesn't match the name on your airline ticket or identification documents.
The TSA maintains records on thousands of travelers who participate in PreCheck. When your name in the TSA system doesn't match your current legal name on your ID or ticket, security officers may flag this discrepancy. While this won't prevent you from traveling, it can slow down your security process and may prevent you from using your PreCheck benefits smoothly.
Understanding how your name appears in the TSA PreCheck system is the first step toward maintaining accurate enrollment records. The TSA stores your information for the duration of your five-year membership period. Your membership doesn't automatically transfer when you change your name—you need to take steps to update the records yourself.
Practical Takeaway: Before attempting to update your TSA PreCheck name, gather your legal name change documentation. You'll need proof that your name change is official and current.
Why Your Name Matters in TSA PreCheck Records
Your name in the TSA PreCheck database serves as a critical identifier that connects you to your membership benefits. When you travel, airline staff enter your information into their booking system. The TSA compares the name on your ticket, your identification, and your Known Traveler Number to verify that everything matches. If these three pieces of information don't align, the system may not recognize your PreCheck status.

TSA PreCheck membership is tied to your specific identity. The program is designed to verify that the person traveling is the same person who completed the background check and was approved for the program. When your legal name changes, this connection can become unclear to the system. Security staff may need to conduct additional verification, which defeats the purpose of PreCheck's expedited screening benefit.
Here's how name mismatches typically occur: Someone gets married and changes their last name legally. They update their driver's license and passport with their new name. However, their TSA PreCheck record still shows their maiden name. When they try to use their KTN on a future flight, the airline system sees a mismatch between the ticket name, the ID name, and the PreCheck name. This creates confusion in the security process.
Additionally, the TSA conducts periodic reviews of traveler information. If your PreCheck records contain outdated information that no longer matches your identification, it could flag your account for review. While rare, extreme discrepancies might even lead to temporary suspension of PreCheck benefits until the matter is resolved.
The TSA also cross-references PreCheck records with other government databases and law enforcement records. If your name change isn't reflected in your PreCheck profile, but is updated elsewhere in government systems, this discrepancy could cause complications during background checks or security reviews.
Practical Takeaway: View your TSA PreCheck name record as a core part of your identity verification. Keeping it current ensures smooth airport experiences and prevents unnecessary security delays.
What Documents You Need for a Name Update
Before you contact the TSA about updating your name, you'll need to gather specific documentation that proves your legal name change is valid and official. The TSA requires proof because they must verify that the person requesting the change is the legitimate PreCheck member and that the name change itself is legitimate.

The primary document you'll need is an official name change document. For people who changed their name through marriage, this is typically a marriage certificate. For people who changed their name through divorce, you'll need a divorce decree that shows your new legal name. For people who completed a legal name change through court petition, you'll need the court order or name change certificate issued by your state.
These documents should be original or certified copies. A certified copy is a document that has been officially verified as matching the original by a government office—usually the courthouse, county clerk, or vital records office where the original document is stored. The TSA generally won't accept photocopies or uncertified documents because there's no way to verify they're authentic.
You'll also need a government-issued photo ID that shows your new legal name. This could be your driver's license, passport, state ID, or similar document. The ID should be current or recently renewed and clearly show your updated name. If you haven't yet obtained an ID with your new name, you may want to obtain one before contacting the TSA, as this will make the update process smoother.
Some situations may require additional documentation. If you changed your name for reasons other than marriage or divorce—such as a gender marker change, name restoration, or other legal reason—you may need to provide the specific court document or government order that authorized the change. Keep any correspondence or notices from the court with your name change documentation.
It's wise to make copies of all these documents and keep them together in a folder. Having everything organized before you start the update process will make the procedure faster and less frustrating.
Practical Takeaway: Obtain certified copies of your name change documents and ensure your government ID reflects your new name before initiating the TSA PreCheck update.
Steps to Update Your Name in the TSA PreCheck System
The process for updating your TSA PreCheck name record involves contacting the TSA through specific channels. You cannot update your name online through the standard PreCheck website or account portal—this is a change that requires verification and must be handled through direct contact with TSA staff.

Your first option is to visit a TSA PreCheck application or enrollment center in person. These centers are located at many airports and some other locations throughout the country. When you visit, bring your original passport or government-issued photo ID that shows your new name, along with your name change documentation (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order). The staff member will review your documents, verify that your name change is legitimate, and update your record in the TSA system.
If you prefer not to visit a center in person, you can contact the TSA by mail. Send a written request to update your name along with copies of your name change documentation and a copy of your updated government ID. Address your letter to the TSA and include your Known Traveler Number if you have it. The TSA processes these requests, though this method takes longer—typically several weeks to a couple of months—because the documents must be physically received, reviewed, and processed.
You can also contact the TSA's customer service line by phone. While they cannot update your information during the phone call, they can provide you with instructions specific to your situation and may be able to note your account that a name change update is pending. They can direct you to the fastest method for your particular circumstances.
When you submit your update request, be prepared to provide several pieces of information: your full legal name (both old and new), your date of birth, your Known Traveler Number, your driver's license number, and contact information. Having this information ready before you submit your request will speed up the process.
After you submit your update, allow processing time. TSA PreCheck records are not updated instantaneously. After your name change is processed, contact your airline or wait until your next booking to ensure the name matches in their system and your PreCheck benefits are working properly.
Practical Takeaway: Visiting a TSA PreCheck enrollment center in person is typically the fastest way to update your name, usually taking just minutes, compared to weeks for mail-in requests.
Timeline and What to Expect During Processing
The amount of time it takes to update your TSA PreCheck name record depends largely on the method you choose. If you visit a TSA PreCheck application center or enrollment facility in person, the update typically happens during your visit. A staff member reviews your documents, verifies your identity, and updates your record in real-time. The entire process usually takes
