Learn About Transferring Your Driver's License to Nevada
Understanding Nevada's Driver's License Transfer Requirements
Moving to Nevada means you'll need to transfer your out-of-state driver's license to a Nevada license. Nevada law requires you to obtain a Nevada driver's license within 30 days of establishing residency in the state. This is not optional—it's a legal requirement for anyone who lives in Nevada and wants to drive legally on public roads.

Nevada defines residency as living in the state with the intent to remain there. This can include renting an apartment, buying a home, or even establishing a permanent address with family or friends. The key is demonstrating that Nevada is now your primary residence, not a temporary location.
Your out-of-state license remains valid during the 30-day window, so you have a reasonable timeframe to complete the transfer process. However, waiting until the last moment can create stress if you encounter any issues or if your local DMV office has long wait times. Many people find it helpful to start the process within the first week or two of moving.
The transfer process is different from obtaining a license as a new driver. Since you already have a valid license from another state, Nevada recognizes your driving history and prior training. This means you won't need to retake the written knowledge test or the driving skills test in most cases—though exceptions exist if your license has been suspended, revoked, or expired for an extended period.
Understanding these basic requirements helps you plan your move more effectively and avoid potential fines or legal issues. The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) handles all license transfers, and having accurate information before you visit makes the process smoother.
Practical takeaway: Mark your calendar for the 30-day deadline and gather your documents within the first week of moving to Nevada to avoid rush situations.
Documents You'll Need to Bring
Preparing the correct documents before visiting a Nevada DMV office saves time and prevents multiple trips. Nevada requires specific proof of several different things: identity, Nevada residency, Social Security number, and in some cases, your current driving record. Having all these documents ready means you can complete your transfer in one visit.

For proof of identity, Nevada accepts a valid passport, a military ID, or a tribal ID card. Your current out-of-state driver's license also works as identity verification. The document must show your name, date of birth, and ideally a photograph, though Nevada DMV has specific rules about which documents they accept, so it's worth checking their official website before your visit.
Nevada residency proof is critical and often the document people forget. The state accepts several options: a utility bill in your name, a lease agreement, a property deed, a mortgage statement, or a government-issued document showing your Nevada address. These documents must be recent—typically from the past 60 days. If you just moved and haven't received a utility bill yet, a signed lease agreement works just as well. Some people use a letter from their employer showing their Nevada work address, though this is less commonly accepted than utility bills or rental agreements.
You'll also need to provide your Social Security number. Bring your Social Security card or another document that displays your Social Security number, such as a tax return or W-2 form. If you don't have your Social Security card readily available, other documents showing your number will work.
Finally, bring your current out-of-state driver's license and be prepared to surrender it to Nevada DMV when you receive your new license. Some people worry about this, but it's standard procedure. Your new Nevada license serves as your primary driver identification from that point forward.
Practical takeaway: Create a folder two weeks before your planned DMV visit and gather these documents: identity document, residency proof (dated within 60 days), Social Security verification, and your current license. Check them off as you collect them.
The Step-by-Step Transfer Process
The actual transfer process at a Nevada DMV office typically takes 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how busy the office is. Understanding what to expect helps reduce anxiety and keeps you organized during your visit.

Start by visiting the Nevada DMV website to locate the office nearest your new Nevada address. Nevada has multiple DMV locations throughout the state, including offices in Las Vegas, Reno, Henderson, North Las Vegas, and smaller towns. Some offices are busier than others, so you might consider visiting during off-peak times like mid-week mornings rather than Friday afternoons or early mornings when people are trying to fit appointments into their work schedules.
When you arrive at your DMV office, you'll typically check in at the front desk or take a number from an automated system. You'll wait for your number to be called, then proceed to a clerk's window. Bring all your documents organized and ready to hand over. The clerk will verify your identity, check your residency proof, and confirm your Social Security number. They may ask questions about your previous state's driving record or whether you've had any license suspensions.
Next, you'll have your photograph taken for your new Nevada license. Nevada's photo requirements are standard—you'll need to remove sunglasses and hats, and your face must be clearly visible. The photo is digital and happens right at the DMV office, so you don't need to bring a photo from elsewhere.
After the photo, you'll pay the license fee. Nevada charges different amounts depending on how long you want your license to be valid. A four-year license costs around $35, while a standard eight-year license costs approximately $70. Prices may change, so check the current fee schedule on Nevada's DMV website. Most offices accept cash, debit cards, and credit cards.
Finally, your old license will be scanned and kept as part of Nevada's records, and you'll receive your new Nevada license—either immediately at some locations or within a few business days by mail at others. Ask the clerk whether your license will be issued on the spot or mailed, so you know what to expect.
Practical takeaway: Visit the Nevada DMV website before your appointment to find wait times and office hours, and plan to visit during quieter times of day and days of the week when possible.
Special Situations and Exceptions
While most driver's license transfers follow the standard process, certain situations require additional steps or documentation. Understanding these exceptions prevents problems when you arrive at the DMV.

If your out-of-state license has been expired for more than one year, Nevada may require you to pass the written knowledge test and the driving skills test, similar to a new driver. This protects public safety by ensuring that drivers with long gaps in licensure demonstrate current knowledge and skills. If your license expired less than one year ago, Nevada may waive these tests, but it's worth calling your local DMV office in advance to confirm what you'll need.
If you've had a license suspension or revocation in any state, Nevada will investigate this before issuing you a new license. You may need to provide documentation about why the suspension occurred and proof that you've met any reinstatement requirements from the previous state. Some suspensions carry over to other states, so Nevada won't allow you to simply get around a suspension by moving. If this situation applies to you, contact Nevada DMV before visiting to understand what documents and steps you need.
If you're under 18 years old, Nevada has different rules for minors than for adults. Minors need parental consent and must meet additional requirements. If you're moving to Nevada as a teenager, check Nevada's specific regulations for minors, as they involve different license types and restrictions on when you can drive.
If your name has changed since your out-of-state license was issued—perhaps through marriage, divorce, or legal name change—bring documentation of the name change. A marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order for a legal name change should accompany your transfer documents. Nevada will update your records to reflect your current legal name.
If you have a commercial driver's license (CDL) from another state and need a Nevada CDL, the process is more complex and may involve testing. CDL transfers have additional requirements beyond standard license transfers, and you should contact Nevada DMV directly for guidance.
Practical takeaway: If any of these special situations apply to you, call Nevada DMV before your visit to ask what additional documents or steps you'll need, rather than discovering this at the office.
