Learn About Removing Passpeys From Google Account

Understanding Passkeys and How They Work in Google Accounts

Passkeys are a newer security method that Google introduced to help protect your account. Unlike traditional passwords that you type in, passkeys use a combination of something you have (like your phone or computer) and something you are (like your fingerprint or face). When you set up a passkey on your Google Account, you're creating a secure way to sign in without needing to remember a complex password.

Google developed passkeys to address problems with traditional passwords. Passwords can be stolen, guessed, or reused across multiple websites, making accounts vulnerable. Passkeys work differently. When you use a passkey to sign in, your device creates a unique code that proves it's really you, without ever sending a password across the internet. This makes it much harder for hackers to break into your account, even if they somehow steal data from Google's servers.

Passkeys are stored on your device—usually your phone, tablet, or computer. When you sign in on a new device, Google asks you to verify using your existing device. For example, if you're signing into Google on a new laptop, Google might ask you to confirm on your phone using your fingerprint. This extra step ensures that only someone with access to your devices can sign in.

Google has been gradually rolling out passkeys to more users. If you're not seeing passkey options in your account yet, it may not be available in your region or for your account type. Google continues to expand this feature over time.

Practical takeaway: Before removing a passkey, understand what it is—a device-based security method that's different from a password. Write down which devices have passkeys set up so you know what you're removing.

Why You Might Want to Remove a Passkey From Your Google Account

There are several practical reasons why someone might need to remove a passkey from their Google Account. The most common reason is changing devices. If you get a new phone or computer, you may want to remove the passkey from your old device to prevent anyone who finds it from accessing your account. This is especially important if you sell, trade in, or give away an old device.

Another reason to remove a passkey is if you no longer use a particular device. Many people have old tablets or laptops sitting in drawers. If you're not using that device anymore, removing its passkey reduces the number of devices that can access your account. The fewer devices with access to your account, the lower the risk that one of them could be compromised.

You might also remove a passkey if you suspect a device has been compromised or stolen. If someone gets access to a device with a passkey on it, they could potentially sign into your Google Account. Removing the passkey from that device means they no longer have this method of access. This is a security step you should take immediately if you believe a device has been compromised.

Some people remove passkeys when they reset a device or want to clear it before giving it to someone else. If you're wiping a device and selling it, removing the passkey from your Google Account first ensures that the new owner cannot access your account through that device.

Additionally, if you're having trouble using a passkey on a device—for example, your fingerprint sensor isn't working—you might temporarily remove it while you troubleshoot the problem. You can always add it back later once the issue is fixed.

Practical takeaway: Make a list of all your devices and which ones have passkeys. Identify which ones you no longer use or plan to remove from your possession soon—these are good candidates for passkey removal.

Steps to Remove a Passkey From Your Google Account

Removing a passkey from your Google Account requires you to access your Google Account settings from a device where you can still sign in. You'll need to go to your Google Account page and navigate to the security section where your passkeys are listed.

Here's the process: First, go to myaccount.google.com in a web browser on any device. Sign in to your Google Account if you're not already signed in. Once you're in, look for the "Security" section on the left side of the page. Click on "Security" to open it. This section contains information about how your account is protected.

In the Security section, scroll down until you find a section related to passkeys or sign-in methods. Google may label this as "Passkeys and security keys" or "How you sign in to Google." Click on this section to expand it and see all the passkeys and other sign-in methods connected to your account.

You'll see a list of your passkeys, usually showing the device name (like "John's iPhone" or "Work Laptop") and the date it was created. Find the passkey you want to remove from this list. Click on the passkey name or look for an options menu next to it. You should see a button or menu that says "Remove," "Delete," or "Disconnect." Click this option.

Google may ask you to confirm that you want to remove the passkey. This confirmation step is a safety measure to prevent accidentally removing a passkey you need. Read the confirmation message carefully, then click the button to confirm the removal. The passkey will then be deleted from your Google Account.

Once you've removed the passkey from your account, that device will no longer be able to use the passkey to sign in to Google. The device itself may still have the passkey stored on it, but your Google Account won't recognize it anymore. If you want to remove the passkey from the device itself (like your phone), you'll need to do that through your device's settings separately.

Practical takeaway: Keep your Google Account password written down in a secure place before removing a passkey. If you remove all your passkeys and forget your password, you'll need it to regain access to your account.

What Happens After You Remove a Passkey

After you remove a passkey from your Google Account, that device will no longer be able to use the passkey for signing in. The next time someone tries to sign into Google using that device, they'll get an error message saying the passkey is no longer valid. This is the intended behavior and helps protect your account from unwanted access.

If you removed the passkey because you no longer use that device, nothing else needs to happen. Your account remains secure, and that device is no longer a potential entry point. You can continue using Google on other devices that still have passkeys or by using your password.

However, if you removed a passkey from a device you still want to use, you have two options. First, you can sign in using your Google password instead. Simply enter your email address and password when prompted to sign in. This works just like signing in before passkeys existed. Second, you can set up a new passkey on that device. Go back to your account settings and create a fresh passkey. This is helpful if you've updated your device, changed its name, or just want to start fresh.

It's important to know that removing a passkey from your Google Account does not remove it from your device. For example, if you removed the passkey from your phone through your Google Account settings, the passkey data may still be stored in your phone's secure storage. If you want to completely delete it from your phone as well, you'll need to do that through your phone's settings. The exact steps vary depending on whether you use an iPhone, Android phone, or another device.

Your other sign-in methods remain unchanged. If you had a backup email address, a recovery phone number, or two-step verification set up, these are still active and working. Removing a passkey doesn't affect any of these other security features. In fact, it's a good idea to make sure you have at least one backup sign-in method available, just in case.

Practical takeaway: After removing a passkey, test signing in on that device using your password to make sure your account is still accessible to you. This confirms that the removal was successful and that you can still access your account.

Removing Passkeys From Multiple Devices

If you're upgrading all your devices or want to reset your passkeys completely, you may need to remove passkeys from multiple devices. Google makes this manageable because all your passkeys are listed in one place in your account settings. You can remove them one at a time without any issues.
