Learn About Driver's License Eye Exam Requirements

Understanding Vision Standards for Driver's Licenses

Each state sets its own vision standards for driver's license holders, but most follow similar guidelines based on recommendations from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). The most common standard is 20/40 vision or better in each eye, with or without corrective lenses like glasses or contact lenses. Some states allow 20/50 vision if you have a wide enough field of view. A few states have slightly different requirements—for example, some accept 20/60 vision with certain restrictions.

The vision test measures visual acuity, which is your ability to see details clearly at a specific distance. The familiar eye chart with rows of letters, called a Snellen chart, is the standard tool used. During a typical test, you stand about 20 feet from the chart and read letters that get progressively smaller. The "20/40" measurement means that what an average person can see clearly at 40 feet, you can see clearly at 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you have what is considered "normal" sight.

Beyond basic acuity, examiners also check your field of vision—how much you can see to the sides while looking straight ahead. A normal field of vision is about 170 to 180 degrees. Your eyes also are tested for color blindness, though most states do not restrict licenses based on color blindness alone. Some states screen for conditions like glaucoma or other eye diseases that could affect driving safety.

Practical takeaway: Before you take your vision test, understand that your state's specific requirements may differ. Contact your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or visit their website to learn the exact vision standards you need to meet. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them to your test, as you will be tested with any corrective lenses you normally use while driving.

How the Eye Exam Process Works at the DMV

When you arrive at the DMV for your driver's license test, the vision screening typically happens as one part of the overall licensing process. The exam usually takes between 5 and 15 minutes and does not require dilation of your pupils or special equipment beyond a basic vision chart and a device called a phoropter in some locations. A phoropter is the mechanical device with different lens options that optometrists use to help find your correct prescription.

The process generally follows these steps: First, you will sit facing the vision chart, usually at a distance of 20 feet. You may be asked to cover one eye while reading letters on the chart with the other. The examiner will record how small the letters can be while you still read them accurately. Then you repeat the process with your other eye. If you wear glasses or contacts for driving, you will be tested wearing them. The examiner may also ask if the letters are clearer with different lens options inserted into the testing device.

Some DMVs use automated vision screening equipment instead of traditional charts. These machines present visual patterns and record your responses automatically. Automated systems can test color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception more quickly than manual testing. However, many states still rely on the standard eye chart method because it is reliable and cost-effective.

After the acuity test, you may be asked about your eye health history. You might be asked if you have had any eye surgeries, if you have conditions like glaucoma or cataracts, or if you are taking medications that could affect your vision. Some states use a brief eye pressure test or screen for glaucoma risk. If you fail the initial test, many states allow you to retake it after a waiting period, often the same day but in some cases you may need to schedule another appointment.

Practical takeaway: Bring any corrective lenses you use for driving, even if you do not wear them all the time. The test measures how well you see with your normal driving setup. If you have had recent changes in your vision, mention this to the examiner. Being honest about your vision abilities helps ensure you receive a license type that matches your actual sight capabilities.

Corrective Lenses and License Restrictions

If you do not meet your state's vision standard without corrective lenses but meet it with them, your license will likely include a restriction code. This means your license will have a note stating that you must wear glasses or contacts while driving. The restriction appears on the front or back of your physical license, and violating this restriction—driving without the required corrective lenses—is a traffic violation in every state.

Restriction codes vary by state but are typically printed as codes or symbols. Some states use codes like "01" or "02," while others use letters. A common restriction related to vision is "B," which means corrective lenses are required. Some states may add restrictions for daylight driving only, limited speed restrictions, or restrictions on highway driving if your vision falls into a gray area between acceptable and unacceptable.

The specific type of corrective lens used during your test matters. If you pass the test while wearing glasses but wear contact lenses while driving, you should inform the examiner. Your license restriction will apply to whatever lens type you used during the test, though practically speaking, as long as your vision meets the standard, the type of lens is not typically restricted. However, some states may test you with both types if you use different corrections for different situations.

If your vision changes after you receive your license, you are responsible for notifying your state's DMV. In most states, you can renew your license before it expires or request a vision retest if you believe your sight has improved or worsened significantly. Some conditions, such as cataracts or progressive eye diseases, can affect your vision over time. If your vision drops below the standard without corrective lenses, you may lose the ability to drive without restrictions or, in severe cases, face license suspension.

Practical takeaway: If your license has a vision restriction, respect it as a legal requirement. Keep a spare pair of glasses in your vehicle or ensure you always have your contact lenses in place before driving. If you switch from glasses to contacts or vice versa, understand that the restriction on your license is based on the type of correction you were tested with. Monitor your eye health and inform the DMV of significant vision changes.

Medical Conditions That May Affect Your Vision Test Results

Several medical conditions can impact how you perform on a driver's license vision test. Cataracts, which cloud the lens of the eye, can make vision blurry and reduce visual acuity. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects central vision, making it hard to see fine details. Diabetic retinopathy, caused by high blood sugar damaging blood vessels in the eye, can also reduce visual acuity and affect peripheral vision. Glaucoma damages the optic nerve and typically affects peripheral vision first, though it can progress to central vision loss if untreated.

Other conditions that may affect vision testing include dry eye syndrome, which causes blurred or fluctuating vision, and keratoconus, a condition where the cornea gradually becomes cone-shaped and distorts vision. Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic condition that causes progressive vision loss, starting with loss of peripheral vision and eventually affecting central vision. Stroke or brain injury can cause vision problems, including loss of part of the visual field or double vision. Certain medications, such as those used to treat high blood pressure, diabetes, or neurological conditions, may have side effects that affect vision.

If you have any of these conditions or suspect you might, it is important to see an eye doctor before taking your DMV vision test. An eye care professional can assess your actual capabilities and discuss whether your condition might affect your ability to meet your state's vision standards. Some people with treated conditions—for example, someone who has had cataract surgery and now sees 20/40 or better—can pass the vision test and receive an unrestricted license. Others may need restrictions or may not meet the standard at all.

It is your responsibility to report any medical conditions that affect your vision when asked during your DMV visit. Providing false information about your health could result in license suspension or criminal charges if you cause an accident. Most states also have a medical review process where they can contact your doctor for information about your condition if there are questions about your ability to drive.

Practical takeaway: If you have an eye condition or take medications that might affect vision, schedule an appointment with an optometrist or ophthalmologist before your DMV visit. Knowing your actual vision measurement helps you understand whether you will pass the test and what restrictions you might receive. Be honest with the DMV examiner about
