Learn About Changing Your Address at New Jersey DMV
Understanding Address Changes at the New Jersey DMV
An address change at the New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles is a routine process that many residents need to complete when they move to a new home. Whether you're relocating within New Jersey or moving from out of state, updating your address with the DMV is an important step to keep your driver's license and vehicle registration current. The DMV maintains records that connect you to your driving privileges, vehicle ownership, and other licensing documents, so keeping this information accurate helps ensure you receive important notices and documents at the correct location.

The New Jersey DMV allows residents to change their address through several different methods, each with varying levels of convenience and processing times. You can update your address in person at a DMV office, by mail, or through online options if you meet certain requirements. Each method has specific requirements and documentation needs, so understanding your options helps you choose the approach that works best for your situation. The process itself is straightforward, but having the right information beforehand can save you time and prevent unnecessary trips to the office.
When you change your address with the New Jersey DMV, you're updating multiple documents at once. Your driver's license record, vehicle registration, and any commercial driver's license information all connect to your address in the DMV system. This means one address change transaction can update several documents rather than requiring separate changes for each one. Understanding this connection helps explain why the DMV needs your current address and why accuracy matters.
Practical takeaway: Before starting an address change, gather information about both your old and new addresses, including the complete street address, city, state, and ZIP code. Having this information ready makes the process move faster regardless of which method you choose.
Methods for Changing Your Address: In-Person, Mail, and Online Options
The New Jersey DMV offers three primary ways to change your address, and each one works differently. In-person address changes happen at any DMV office throughout the state. You can walk in during business hours with your current driver's license or ID card and request an address change. This method typically takes only a few minutes and your new license arrives by mail within two to three weeks. The advantage of visiting in person is that you can ask questions, get immediate confirmation of your request, and address any issues on the spot if problems arise.

Mail-in address changes allow you to update your address without visiting an office. You'll need to send your current driver's license or ID card to the DMV along with a completed form and proof of your new address. The mail method takes longer than in-person changes—typically three to four weeks for processing plus mailing time—but it works well if you live far from a DMV office or have a busy schedule. You'll receive your updated license or ID card by mail once the change is processed.
Online address changes through the New Jersey DMV website represent the fastest option for eligible residents. The online system allows you to update your address from home using your computer or mobile device. However, not everyone can use the online method. The system typically requires that you have a New Jersey driver's license or ID card issued within the past few years, and your license or ID must not be expired. The online process takes just a few minutes, and your confirmation appears on screen immediately. Depending on your specific situation, a new card may or may not be issued, and the DMV will explain this during the online process.
Practical takeaway: If you want the fastest confirmation and avoid waiting for mail delivery, try the online method first to see if you're able to use it. If online isn't an option, in-person visits are typically faster than mailing documents, and an in-person visit lets you complete everything in one trip to an office.
Required Documents and Information for Address Changes
When you change your address at the New Jersey DMV, you need to provide two main categories of information: identification and proof of your new address. For identification, bring your current driver's license or non-driver ID card. The DMV uses this to look up your record and confirm your identity. If your license or ID is expired, bring it anyway—the DMV can still process address changes with expired documents in most cases, though you may need to renew your license at the same time depending on how long it's been expired.

Proof of your new address requires an official document showing your name and your new street address. The DMV accepts several types of documents for this purpose. A utility bill (such as electric, gas, water, or internet service) works well because it shows your name and address clearly and is current. A lease agreement or property deed also proves your address. Bank statements, mortgage statements, and insurance documents (home, auto, or renters insurance) are all acceptable. Some people use government mail such as a tax notice or benefit statement. The document should be dated within the past 90 days to show that your address change is recent and reflects your actual current residence. If you recently moved and don't yet have a utility bill or official document in your name at the new address, explain your situation to the DMV staff—they may be able to work with you.
If you're changing your address online, you won't need to provide physical documents. Instead, you'll answer questions that verify your identity, such as information from your driver's license record or previous transactions. The online system uses this information to confirm you are who you say you are before processing the address change.
For mail-in address changes, send copies of your proof of address documents along with your current driver's license or ID card. Include the completed address change form, which you can obtain from the New Jersey DMV website. Mail these items to the address listed on the form. Because you're sending your ID card through the mail, factor in time for postal delivery.
Practical takeaway: Gather your proof of address document before you head to the DMV office or prepare your mail package. Having this ready prevents delays and ensures you have everything needed to complete the address change without additional visits or calls.
Step-by-Step Process for Each Address Change Method
The in-person address change process at a New Jersey DMV office starts with arriving during regular business hours. You don't need to make an appointment for most address changes, though some offices now accept them. When you arrive, take a number from the ticket system and wait for your turn. When called, approach the counter and explain that you need to change your address. The staff member will ask for your current driver's license or ID card and your proof of new address. They'll verify the information, ask you to confirm your new address, and enter it into the system. You'll receive a confirmation document showing your new address. Your updated license or ID card will be mailed to your new address within two to three weeks. The entire in-person transaction typically takes five to fifteen minutes depending on how busy the office is.

The mail-in process requires more preparation but no travel to an office. First, visit the New Jersey DMV website and download or request the address change form. Complete the form with your old address, new address, and current contact information. Include your current driver's license or ID card in the envelope (send a copy if possible to keep your original). Attach a copy of your proof of address document. Include any additional forms required by the DMV for your specific situation, such as if you need to update commercial driving privileges. Mail the package to the address listed on the form. Use regular mail or a tracked service if you want confirmation of delivery. Processing typically takes two to four weeks after the DMV receives your package, then one to two weeks for mail delivery of your new card. Total time from sending to receiving your updated card is usually four to six weeks.
The online address change process starts by visiting the New Jersey DMV website and finding the online services section. You'll answer questions to verify your identity and confirm your eligibility for online changes. Once verified, you'll enter your new address exactly as it should appear on your license or ID. Review the information carefully before submitting because mistakes become difficult to correct. After submitting, you'll receive an on-screen confirmation. The DMV will send you an email confirming the address change. In some cases, you'll need a new card printed; in others, your address record updates without a new card being issued. The DMV explains this during the online process.
Practical takeaway: Choose the method that matches your situation: go in person if you want it done quickly and have time for a trip, use mail if you need to send your ID card and can wait several weeks, or try online if you want the fastest option and your license isn't expired.
