How to Repair Dentures at Home Guide
Understanding Common Denture Damage and When Home Repair Is Possible
Dentures are custom-made oral devices that replace missing teeth, and they require regular maintenance to stay functional. According to dental research, denture wearers experience an average of three to five repairs or adjustments during the first two years of use. Common damage includes small cracks in the acrylic base, broken clasps that hold partial dentures in place, chipped tooth surfaces, and loose denture teeth that have separated from the base material.

Understanding what types of damage you can address at home versus what requires professional attention is crucial. Minor surface cracks, small chips on artificial teeth, and loose denture adhesive residue are problems many people manage independently. However, structural damage affecting how the denture fits in your mouth, breaks affecting the denture's ability to stay in place, or damage to the clasps on partial dentures typically require professional repair because improper fixes can cause discomfort, difficulty eating, or changes to your bite alignment.
The cost of professional denture repair ranges from $50 to $400 depending on the damage severity, according to the American Dental Association. Many dental insurance plans cover 50 percent of denture repair costs after meeting a deductible. Temporary home repairs can extend the life of your dentures between professional visits and prevent small problems from becoming major ones.
Before attempting any repair, remove your dentures and examine them under good lighting. Use a magnifying glass if available to identify exactly what damage occurred. Gently run your fingers along the surfaces to feel for rough spots, cracks, or loose areas. Document the damage with photos or notes so you can describe it accurately if you eventually visit a dentist.
Practical Takeaway: Learn to distinguish between minor surface damage you can address at home and structural problems requiring professional repair. Small cracks, loose denture teeth, and surface chips are candidates for temporary home management, while clasps, major breaks, and fit problems need dental attention.
Cleaning and Preparing Dentures for Repair Work
Proper cleaning is the essential first step before any repair attempt. Dentures accumulate plaque, tartar, food particles, and bacteria throughout the day, and debris can interfere with repair products' ability to bond properly. Start by rinsing your dentures under lukewarm running water—never use hot water, which can warp the acrylic material. Use a soft-bristled denture brush or old toothbrush to gently brush all surfaces, including the underside that contacts your gums.

For stubborn buildup, soak dentures in a commercial denture cleaning solution following package instructions, typically for four to eight hours or overnight. These solutions contain ingredients like sodium hypochlorite or peroxide that break down organic deposits. Alternatively, mix one part white vinegar with three parts water and soak dentures for 30 minutes, then brush. Both methods are effective and inexpensive—denture cleaning solutions cost $5 to $15 per container and typically last several months with regular use.
After soaking, rinse thoroughly under running water and use your brush to remove any remaining residue. Pay special attention to grooves, crevices, and the areas where artificial teeth attach to the base. Dry dentures completely with a lint-free cloth before repair work. Any moisture left on surfaces can prevent adhesives and repair compounds from setting properly.
Inspect the cleaned dentures carefully for additional damage you may not have noticed before cleaning. Sometimes plaque buildup obscures small cracks or loose areas. Check that clasps on partial dentures move freely and haven't been damaged. Examine the artificial teeth for cracks extending into the base material versus surface-only damage. Make notes about all damage you observe before proceeding with repairs.
Practical Takeaway: Thoroughly clean and dry dentures before any repair attempt. Plaque and debris prevent repair products from bonding correctly, and cleaning often reveals additional damage that needs attention.
Repairing Small Cracks and Chips in Denture Acrylic
Small cracks in the acrylic base or minor chips in artificial teeth can be temporarily repaired using denture repair kits available at pharmacies and online retailers for $10 to $30. These kits typically contain acrylic powder, liquid monomer, and application tools. Popular products include Denturite and other over-the-counter repair systems. The acrylic material used in these kits is similar to what dentists use, though professional-grade materials often have superior longevity.

To repair a small crack, start by ensuring the crack area is completely clean and dry. Use a small metal file or sandpaper (220-grit or finer) to slightly roughen the area around the crack, which helps the repair material bond more effectively. Wipe away all dust with a damp cloth and let dry completely. Following your repair kit's instructions, mix the acrylic powder and liquid according to specified ratios—this typically means placing drops of liquid into powder until a putty-like consistency forms. The mixture usually hardens in five to ten minutes.
Apply the mixed acrylic into and around the crack using a small applicator stick or the tool provided in your kit. Press it firmly into the damaged area, overfilling slightly since the material shrinks slightly as it cures. Smooth the surface with a damp applicator tool or cloth while the material is still workable. Once fully hardened, use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges and blend the repair with surrounding surfaces. For aesthetic concerns, some people apply denture-colored paint after the acrylic repair hardens, available from dental supply companies.
For chips in artificial teeth, follow the same process, being careful to match the contour of the tooth as closely as possible during the repair. This temporary fix typically lasts several months before needing professional refinishing. If a crack extends more than one-half inch or runs through the area where teeth attach to the base, professional repair is preferable because home repairs in structural areas may not provide adequate strength.
Practical Takeaway: Use acrylic repair kits from pharmacies to fill small cracks and chips, but understand these are temporary fixes lasting several months. Professional repair is needed for large cracks or damage in load-bearing areas.
Addressing Loose or Fallen-Out Denture Teeth
Denture teeth can loosen and fall out due to degradation of the acrylic that holds them, impact from dropping dentures, or normal wear over years of use. A denture typically contains 12 to 16 artificial teeth for a full upper or lower denture. When a tooth loosens, you may notice it wobbles or shifts slightly. When a tooth falls out completely, there's an obvious gap in your denture.

If a tooth is loose but still attached, try stabilizing it before it falls out completely. Clean the area thoroughly and inspect whether the acrylic around the tooth has cracked or deteriorated. Small cracks around the tooth can be treated similarly to the crack repair process described previously—roughen the surface, clean completely, and apply acrylic repair compound around the loosened tooth to resecure it. This often extends the life of that tooth for several more months.
For teeth that have already fallen out, you have two options: attempting temporary replacement at home or waiting for professional repair. For temporary replacement, replacement denture teeth can be purchased from dental supply companies for $5 to $15 per tooth. However, installing a replacement tooth at home is complex and rarely produces results as secure as professional work. The tooth must be properly aligned with surrounding teeth to avoid bite problems, and adhesion requires precise technique.
A more practical temporary solution is wearing your dentures as-is until professional repair can be scheduled. Many dental offices offer rush repair services where dentures are fixed within 24 to 48 hours for modest additional fees. During the interim, you can adjust your diet to softer foods that don't require as much chewing pressure on the area with the missing tooth. Some people use temporary denture adhesive (not the same as denture cream for daily wear) to improve denture stability if multiple teeth are missing.
Practical Takeaway: Loose teeth can sometimes be restabilized with acrylic repair compound, but fallen-out teeth are best addressed by a dental professional. Plan to schedule repair rather than attempting complex tooth replacement at home.
