How to Remove Downloaded iOS Updates Guide

Understanding iOS Update Storage and Management

Apple devices store iOS updates in a specific location on your device before installation. When you receive a notification about a new iOS version, your iPhone or iPad begins preparing that update by saving the installation files to internal storage. These files typically occupy several gigabytes of space. For example, iOS 17 updates range from 3 to 6 gigabytes depending on your device model and the specific version number.

The system automatically manages these files through its built-in storage optimization. However, understanding where these files live helps you make informed decisions about your device's storage. The update files are stored in a hidden directory on your device that most users cannot access through the standard Files app. This protected location keeps the update files separate from your personal data, photos, and applications.

Storage capacity becomes important when you have limited space remaining on your device. If your iPhone shows less than 1.5 gigabytes of free storage, the system may prevent you from receiving new updates until you free up space. Some users find themselves in situations where they want to reclaim this storage space without installing a pending update.

Different iOS versions require different amounts of space. A major iOS release (like jumping from iOS 16 to iOS 17) requires more storage than a minor update (like iOS 17.1 to iOS 17.1.1). Checking your device's storage settings in the Settings app under General > iPhone Storage shows you a breakdown of what's using space, though the hidden update files won't appear in this list.

Practical Takeaway: Before attempting to remove updates, check your current storage situation in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Note how much free space you have and which applications consume the most space. This information helps you understand whether removing an update is necessary for your specific situation.

Method 1: Deleting Updates Through Settings

The most straightforward method to remove a pending iOS update uses the Settings application built into your device. This approach works on any iPhone or iPad running iOS 12 or later. Begin by opening the Settings app on your home screen, then navigate to General. From the General menu, select iPhone Storage (on iPhone) or iPad Storage (on iPad).

Look for an entry labeled "iOS [version number]" or "iPadOS [version number]" in the storage list. This entry represents the update files currently stored on your device. Tap on this entry to open the update information page. You will see an option to "Delete Update" or "Remove Update" displayed as a red button or option.

When you select the delete option, the system removes all installation files associated with that pending update. This process typically takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on your device's processing speed and the size of the update files. During this time, avoid using your device or performing other tasks.

After deletion completes, the update files are permanently removed from your device storage. The space they occupied becomes available for other uses. Your device will not automatically re-attempt to install this same version. However, when Apple releases the next update version, your device will eventually prompt you to install that newer version instead.

One important consideration: some users report that certain devices occasionally re-download the same update within days or weeks. This happens because Apple's servers continue to push the update to devices until they either install it or the user actively prevents it through other methods described in this guide. Removing the update through Settings handles the files already present on your device but doesn't prevent future notifications.

Practical Takeaway: Use this method as your first approach since it requires no technical knowledge and causes no harm to your device. After deletion, monitor whether your device receives the same update notification again. If notifications return, you may need to use additional methods described later in this guide.

Method 2: Turning Off Automatic Update Downloads

Beyond removing existing update files, you can configure your device to stop automatically preparing updates in the background. This prevents new update files from accumulating on your device without your active involvement. Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates on your device.

You will find several toggle options in this menu. The "Automatic Updates" toggle controls whether your device automatically installs updates overnight when connected to power and WiFi. Turning this toggle off prevents automatic installation but doesn't stop your device from downloading updates.

The "Download iOS Updates" toggle specifically controls background downloading of update files. When enabled, your device silently prepares update files whenever it's connected to WiFi. Disabling this toggle stops your device from storing new update files on its own. With this setting disabled, you maintain complete control over when (or if) your device prepares update files.

Keep in mind that disabling automatic updates means you become responsible for manually installing updates when you choose to do so. Some users prefer this approach because it gives them time to read update release notes and user feedback before committing to installation. Others use this method temporarily while traveling or when device storage is limited, then re-enable automatic updates later.

These settings apply device-wide, affecting all future iOS updates. If you share your device with family members, changing these settings impacts how updates are managed for everyone using the device. Some households establish update schedules where one person manages installation timing for all household devices.

Practical Takeaway: Disable the "Download iOS Updates" toggle if you want to prevent future update files from accumulating on your device. This method takes 60 seconds and works alongside removing existing updates. Check these settings periodically since iOS updates sometimes reset these toggles back to enabled.

Method 3: Resetting Network Settings to Clear Update Notifications

Sometimes Apple's update server continues sending update notifications even after you delete the update files from your device. This occurs because the server records that your device exists and needs that update version. Resetting your network settings clears the device's connection history with Apple servers, which can stop recurring update notifications.

To perform a network reset, open Settings and navigate to General > Reset. Select "Reset Network Settings" from the menu. You will be prompted to enter your device passcode as confirmation. This action resets all network configurations including WiFi passwords, VPN settings, cellular data settings, and Bluetooth pairings.

After a network reset, your device appears as a "new" device to Apple's servers. This often prevents the server from pushing the same update version you previously deleted. However, your device will still receive notifications about future iOS versions that Apple wants you to install.

Important considerations for this method: You must manually reconnect to your WiFi network after the reset completes. You'll need to enter your WiFi password again. If you use a VPN, that configuration is also removed and must be reconfigured. Bluetooth devices like headphones or smartwatches need to be paired again with your device.

This method works particularly well for users who repeatedly receive the same update notification after deleting it. The network reset essentially tells Apple's servers to stop pushing that specific version. Plan to perform a network reset during a time when you can spend 10-15 minutes reconfiguring your wireless connections.

Practical Takeaway: Use this method if you continue receiving notifications for an update you've already deleted. Perform a network reset, then reconnect to WiFi and check your update settings. Wait a few days to see if the same update notification returns. If it doesn't, the method worked.

Method 4: Using Restrictions and Screen Time Settings

Apple's Screen Time feature includes content restrictions that can prevent iOS updates from being installed without your permission. While this method doesn't delete existing update files, it prevents automatic installation and creates an additional barrier to accidental updates. This approach works particularly well for shared devices or parental controls situations.

Open Settings and navigate to Screen Time. Tap "Use Screen Time Passcode" and create a four-digit code separate from your device passcode. This Screen Time passcode protects the restrictions you're about to set. Once enabled, go to Screen Time > App Limits > Add Limit, though this isn't the main restriction we need.

Instead, return to the Screen Time menu and select "Content & Privacy Restrictions." Enable this feature by toggling it on. You'll be prompted to enter your Screen Time passcode. Once enabled, navigate to "Allowed Apps" within this section.

Find the "System Apps" section and scroll through the list. Locate "Settings" and ensure it remains enabled so you can still access device settings. However, this restriction prevents the Settings app from making
