How to Change Your PS5 Home Screen Wallpaper
Understanding PS5 Home Screen Customization Options
The PlayStation 5 home screen, also called the home interface, serves as your central hub when you turn on the console. This screen displays your profile, recently played games, installed titles, and various other information. Sony designed the PS5 interface to give players different ways to personalize their experience, and changing the wallpaper represents one of the most straightforward customization methods available.

Your PS5 wallpaper appears as the background image behind all the icons, text, and menu elements on your home screen. This background setting is distinct from other visual customization options like changing your profile picture or adjusting theme colors. The wallpaper specifically controls the large background image that fills most of your screen space. Understanding this distinction matters because the process for changing wallpaper differs from other cosmetic adjustments you might make to your console.
PlayStation offers several categories of wallpapers that owners can choose from. The console comes with default wallpapers built into the system. Additionally, many games include their own wallpapers that unlock when you own or play them. Some wallpapers are themed around popular PlayStation franchises like God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon, or Final Fantasy. Other wallpapers feature abstract designs, nature scenes, or artistic compositions.
The wallpaper selection system works differently depending on which source the image comes from. Built-in system wallpapers are always there to select, while game-specific wallpapers only appear in your selection menu after you've obtained the corresponding game. This means your wallpaper options expand as your game library grows. Some players collect games specifically to unlock unique wallpaper designs.
Practical Takeaway: Before changing your wallpaper, take time to browse through the available options on your console. You may find that wallpapers from games you already own are waiting to be discovered. Understanding what wallpapers are available helps you make an informed choice about which one fits your preferences.
Navigating to the Settings Menu on Your PS5
Accessing the PS5 settings menu is the first step in changing your wallpaper. From your home screen, you'll need to locate and open the Settings application. The Settings icon typically appears on the far right side of your home screen menu, though its exact position may vary depending on how you've organized your screen. The Settings icon generally looks like a gear symbol or cog wheel, which is a common visual representation for settings across many electronic devices.

To reach Settings, use your PS5 controller to navigate the home screen. Point your cursor toward the right side of the screen where system applications typically group together. Scroll right if needed to reveal additional menu items. Once you spot the Settings icon, press the X button on your controller to open it. The menu will load, and you'll see various setting categories displayed as rows or sections.
Inside the Settings menu, you'll find numerous options organized into logical categories. These categories include system settings, network settings, account settings, storage information, and others. The menu typically displays these options in a vertical list format. You can scroll up and down through the list using your controller's directional pad or thumbstick. Each category contains related settings grouped together for easy navigation.
Finding the specific section related to display and appearance settings is your next goal. Different PS5 menu versions may label this section slightly differently. Common names include "Themes," "System," "Display and Sound," or "Appearance Settings." Spend a moment reading the category names carefully. If you're unsure which section contains wallpaper options, the "System" or "Display and Sound" categories are typically good places to start your search.
Practical Takeaway: Familiarize yourself with your Settings menu layout before attempting to change your wallpaper. Taking time to explore the menu structure means you'll navigate more confidently and remember the path for future adjustments. Most people only need to find this location once, as the process becomes second nature after the first attempt.
Locating the Wallpaper or Theme Settings Section
Once you're in the main Settings menu, finding the wallpaper options requires knowing where PlayStation stores these settings. The wallpaper functionality typically falls under a section related to themes, appearance, or system display settings. On most PS5 systems, this section is labeled simply as "Themes" or sometimes appears within a broader "System" category. The exact naming and organization can vary slightly depending on your console's software version and region.

Look for options that mention themes, wallpapers, backgrounds, or appearance customization. When you find what appears to be the correct section, select it by pressing the X button on your controller. The menu will expand to show available options related to visual customization. You should now see options for changing your home screen background or wallpaper, along with possibly other theme-related settings.
The wallpaper settings section typically displays your currently active wallpaper at the top, showing you which background is currently being used. Below this preview, you'll usually see options to browse available wallpapers. These options might be labeled as "Select Wallpaper," "Change Wallpaper," "Available Wallpapers," or something similar. Different PS5 software versions may use slightly different terminology, but the concept remains the same.
Some PS5 systems organize wallpapers into categories. You might see separate sections for "System Wallpapers," "Game Wallpapers," or wallpapers organized by franchise or theme. System wallpapers are those that came built into your console from the factory. Game wallpapers are those associated with specific games in your library. If you see these categories, you can explore each one to see all your options. This organization makes browsing your full selection of wallpapers more manageable.
Practical Takeaway: When navigating settings menus, don't be afraid to explore different sections if you can't immediately find what you're looking for. The settings structure is designed to be reversible, and you won't accidentally change anything by simply browsing and reading menu options. Take note of the exact section name on your console so you can return to it later if needed.
Browsing and Selecting Available Wallpapers
After reaching the wallpaper selection screen, you'll see a display showing available wallpapers you can choose from. The interface typically presents these options as thumbnail images or preview squares that you can scroll through. Use your controller's directional pad or thumbstick to move between different wallpaper options. Each wallpaper will display as a preview, giving you a sense of how it will look as your background.

As you browse through wallpapers, pay attention to the names or titles associated with each one. Many wallpapers are labeled according to their source game or theme. For example, you might see wallpapers named "God of War Ragnarök," "Demon's Souls," "Spider-Man," or "Starfield." Abstract and artistic wallpapers might have names like "Blue Abstract," "Cosmic Wave," or "Geometric Pattern." These labels help you identify which wallpapers come from which games and what visual style each one represents.
The preview images shown during browsing give you a reasonable representation of how each wallpaper will appear on your home screen. However, keep in mind that the actual size and appearance might differ slightly depending on your TV's screen size and display settings. A wallpaper with small text or intricate details might be harder to see on smaller screens, while abstract patterns typically remain clear regardless of screen size.
As you explore your options, you may notice that certain wallpapers are only available if you own the associated game. If you see a wallpaper from a game you haven't purchased yet, it typically appears grayed out or marked as unavailable. This is normal behavior. Once you obtain that game, the wallpaper becomes selectable. Some players strategically plan their game purchases to unlock wallpapers they particularly want.
Practical Takeaway: Spend time previewing different wallpapers before making a final selection. Since changing your wallpaper takes only seconds and you can repeat the process whenever you want, there's no penalty for experimenting. Many players change their wallpaper seasonally or based on which games they're currently playing, so your choice today isn't permanent.
Confirming and Applying Your Wallpaper Selection
Once you've found a wallpaper you'd like to use, the next step is confirming your selection. When a wallpaper is highlighted on your screen, typically pressing the X button on your controller will either select it or open an option to confirm. Some versions
