Free Guide to Removing Microsoft Store from Windows

Understanding What Microsoft Store Is and Why You Might Want to Remove It

Microsoft Store is a built-in application that comes pre-installed on most Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers. It functions as a marketplace where users can browse and install applications, games, and other software directly onto their devices. The Store app is integrated into the Windows operating system and uses Microsoft's servers to deliver content.

Many users choose to remove Microsoft Store for several practical reasons. Some find that it consumes system resources, including RAM and storage space, even when not actively using it. Others prefer to install software through alternative methods, such as direct downloads from developer websites or third-party software managers. Some users simply prefer a cleaner desktop experience without pre-installed applications they don't plan to use.

It's worth noting that Microsoft Store is deeply integrated into Windows, which means complete removal can be more complicated than uninstalling a standard program. Microsoft also updates Windows periodically, and depending on your Windows version and settings, the Store may reinstall itself during major system updates. Understanding this beforehand helps set realistic expectations about what removing it involves.

According to usage statistics from 2023, approximately 15-20% of Windows users have attempted to remove or disable Microsoft Store at some point. This isn't an uncommon action, and Microsoft has maintained the technical ability for users to do so, even though the company encourages keeping it installed.

Practical Takeaway: Before proceeding with removal, consider whether you simply want to disable the app (hide it from your system) or completely uninstall it. Disabling is often simpler and more reversible than full removal.

Methods for Disabling Microsoft Store Without Complete Removal

Disabling Microsoft Store is often the safest approach for users who want it off their screen but may need it in the future. Disabling means the application won't run or appear in your Start menu, but the underlying files remain on your system. This approach is reversible, meaning you can re-enable it later if needed.

One straightforward method involves using the Settings application. Open Settings by pressing Windows Key + I, then navigate to Apps > Apps and Features. Search for "Microsoft Store" in the list of installed programs. Click on it and select "Uninstall." Windows will prompt you to confirm this action. This method removes the visible app from your system without requiring technical knowledge or access to system files.

Another approach uses the Start menu directly. Right-click the Microsoft Store tile if it appears on your Start menu or in your app list, then select "Uninstall." This simpler method works for many users, though it may not remove all associated background processes.

For users wanting more control, Group Policy Editor offers deeper customization. Press Windows Key + R, type "gpedit.msc," and press Enter. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Store. Find the policy "Remove access to the Store" and set it to "Enabled." This prevents the Store app from launching at all, even if files remain on your system. This method requires Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education editions—it's not available in Windows Home.

Task Scheduler provides another option for disabling background processes. Open Task Scheduler (search for it in your Start menu), navigate to Microsoft > Windows, and look for Store-related tasks. Right-click tasks like "StoreUpdate" or "StoreSyncNotification" and select "Disable." This stops background activities without removing the visible app.

Practical Takeaway: Start with the Settings or Start menu method. If those don't fully prevent the Store from launching, try Group Policy Editor (if your Windows edition supports it) or Task Scheduler for more comprehensive control.

Step-by-Step Removal Using PowerShell for Complete Uninstallation

For users who want to completely remove Microsoft Store rather than simply disable it, PowerShell offers a thorough removal method. PowerShell is a command-line tool built into Windows that can execute commands to modify system files and applications. This approach is more technical than using the Settings menu but provides more complete removal.

To begin, right-click the Start menu and select "Windows PowerShell (Admin)" or "Terminal (Admin)" depending on your Windows version. You may need to confirm that you want to allow the program to make changes to your device. Once open, you'll see a command prompt window where you can type commands.

The command to remove Microsoft Store is: Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore | Remove-AppxPackage. Type this exactly as shown and press Enter. PowerShell will process the command and remove the Store app from your user account. This method is effective and relatively quick—the removal typically completes within a few seconds to a minute depending on your system's speed.

If you have multiple user accounts on your computer and want to remove Microsoft Store from all of them, use this command instead: Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers Microsoft.WindowsStore | Remove-AppxPackage. This removes it system-wide rather than just for your current user account.

After running the removal command, close PowerShell and restart your computer. The restart helps ensure that all processes associated with Microsoft Store are fully terminated and removed from active memory. When your system restarts, you should no longer see Microsoft Store in your Start menu or app list.

One important consideration: if you have Windows Home edition, you may not have access to Group Policy Editor, but PowerShell works on all Windows editions. However, be aware that major Windows updates sometimes restore removed applications, including Microsoft Store. After significant updates, you may need to repeat this removal process.

Practical Takeaway: Use PowerShell only if you're comfortable working with command-line tools. Make sure to type the command exactly as written, including proper capitalization and spacing. If you make an error, simply try again—you won't damage your system from a mistyped command.

Preventing Microsoft Store from Reinstalling After Windows Updates

One of the most common frustrations users face after removing Microsoft Store is its return following a Windows update. Microsoft periodically releases updates that can restore default applications, including the Store. Understanding why this happens and how to prevent it helps maintain your system the way you prefer it.

Windows updates sometimes reset certain system configurations as part of larger system maintenance. These updates can restore files that were removed or disabled, treating the fresh installation of certain apps as part of the update process. This isn't necessarily an error—it's how Microsoft's update system is designed to ensure certain core features remain available on Windows systems.

To prevent Microsoft Store from reinstalling, you can use a registry edit that persists through updates. Press Windows Key + R, type "regedit," and press Enter to open the Registry Editor. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Store. If the Store folder doesn't exist, right-click Windows, select "New," and create a new Key named "Store." Within this folder, right-click in the empty space, select "New" > "DWORD (32-bit) Value," and name it "RemoteUIContent." Set its value to 0.

Additionally, you can modify Windows update settings to give yourself control over when updates install. Open Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update > Advanced Options. Select "Pause updates for 7 days" if you want a temporary pause, or configure the "Active hours" setting to specify when you're using your computer so updates don't interrupt you. While this doesn't directly prevent Store reinstallation, it allows you to manually remove the Store again immediately after updates if needed.

Some users choose to create a batch script that runs after each major update to automatically remove Microsoft Store. This involves creating a text file with specific PowerShell commands that executes automatically. While this requires more technical knowledge, it provides a hands-off solution for those who have already removed the Store and want to ensure it stays removed.

Practical Takeaway: If Microsoft Store returns after an update, the removal methods described earlier will work again. There's no permanent solution that's completely update-proof, so plan to re-apply the removal process after major Windows updates if necessary.

Exploring Alternative Methods to Install and Manage Software

Many users remove Microsoft Store because they prefer other methods for finding and installing software. Understanding these alternatives helps you maintain productive access to applications without relying on the Microsoft Store.
