Free Guide to Changing Pocket Watch Batteries
Understanding Pocket Watch Battery Basics
Pocket watches that require batteries typically use one of several standard battery types. The most common are silver oxide batteries, which provide steady voltage throughout their lifespan. These batteries are labeled with numbers like SR626, SR927, or SR44, with the letters indicating the type and the numbers showing the size and voltage specifications. Alkaline batteries, marked as LR44 or similar, are less expensive alternatives but drain faster. Zinc-air batteries, often used in hearing aids and some vintage pocket watches, have a distinctive design with a pull-tab that activates them when removed.

Understanding your pocket watch's battery requirements starts with checking the case back or instruction manual. Most pocket watches display the battery type and voltage needed somewhere in their documentation. A standard pocket watch typically uses a single battery ranging from 1.5 volts to 3 volts, depending on the movement type. Battery voltage directly affects how your watch keeps time—using the wrong voltage can cause your watch to run too fast or too slow. Before attempting any battery change, take note of the exact battery model number, which you'll need when purchasing a replacement.
Battery lifespan varies considerably based on the type and how often you wind or use your watch. A silver oxide battery in a mechanical pocket watch typically lasts 18 to 36 months, while alkaline batteries may only last 12 to 18 months. Quartz movements, which rely entirely on battery power to keep accurate time, will drain batteries faster than mechanical watches that you also wind manually. Environmental factors like temperature extremes and humidity also affect battery longevity. If your watch has been sitting unused for months, the battery may have already drained or corroded.
Practical takeaway: Before you begin, locate your pocket watch's instruction manual or examine the case back for battery type information. Write down the exact battery model number and voltage requirement. This single step prevents purchasing the wrong battery and ensures your watch continues operating correctly after the battery change.
Tools and Materials You'll Need
Changing a pocket watch battery requires only a few basic tools, most of which you may already have at home. The most important tool is a case opener, also called a case knife or watchmaker's tool. This flat, wedge-shaped instrument is specifically designed to open the case backs of watches without damaging them. You can purchase stainless steel case openers from watch supply retailers, online marketplaces, or jewelry stores for between $5 and $20. Some pocket watches have screw-back cases that require a small screwdriver instead—typically a Phillips or flathead screwdriver, depending on the screw type.

Beyond the case opener, gather a small flathead screwdriver or coin that fits your specific watch's battery retaining clip. Battery retaining clips hold the battery firmly in place and must be loosened to remove the old battery and install the new one. A soft, lint-free cloth is essential for preventing fingerprints and dirt from getting inside your watch. Cotton gloves or finger cots (small plastic covers for individual fingers) help keep oils from your skin off the battery terminals and internal watch components. A small container or tray with compartments is useful for organizing small screws and parts while the case is open, preventing loss or confusion about where each piece belongs.
You'll also want to have the replacement battery on hand before opening your watch. Purchasing the battery beforehand means your watch doesn't sit open longer than necessary, which reduces the risk of dust or moisture entering the case. Some people keep a magnifying glass nearby to see the battery terminals and retaining clip clearly, especially if they have vision difficulties. A small penlight or headlamp provides better illumination inside the watch case. These tools combined create an organized, efficient workspace that makes the battery change process go smoothly.
Practical takeaway: Gather all tools before opening your pocket watch. Essential items include a case opener, the correct replacement battery, a small screwdriver, a lint-free cloth, and a well-lit workspace. Having everything ready prevents the watch from remaining open longer than necessary and reduces contamination risk.
Step-by-Step Process for Opening Your Pocket Watch
Opening your pocket watch safely requires patience and the correct technique to avoid damaging the case or internal components. Start by examining the case back carefully to determine whether it's a screw-back or snap-back design. Screw-back cases have visible grooves or notches around the edges and require a screwdriver to remove. Snap-back cases have a smooth or slightly beveled edge and open with a flat case knife tool. Hold the watch firmly but gently in one hand, taking care not to apply excessive pressure that could bend or crack the case.

For snap-back cases, position your case opener tool in the slight groove where the case back meets the main body of the watch. This groove is specifically designed to accept the flat blade of a case opener. Gently tap the handle of the case opener with a small hammer or mallet, or carefully apply steady pressure by hand. The key is using gradual, consistent force rather than sudden movements. Rotate your pressure point around the edge of the case back as it begins to lift, working your way around until the back gradually separates from the body. Never pry aggressively at one spot, as this can bend the case back permanently or scratch the delicate metal.
For screw-back cases, use the appropriate screwdriver that matches your watch's screw type. Hold the watch steady with one hand while slowly turning the screwdriver counterclockwise with the other. Take care not to over-tighten when you reinstall—hand-tight pressure is sufficient. Once the screws are removed, set them in a small container in the order you remove them. If your watch has multiple screws, taking a photo of the case back before removal helps you remember their original positions. After removing screws, you may still need to use gentle prying pressure with a case knife to fully separate the case back.
Practical takeaway: Open your pocket watch gradually using appropriate tools for your case type. For snap-back cases, apply gentle, rotating pressure around the edge. For screw-back cases, remove screws slowly and organize them carefully. Never force anything—if the case back resists, you may be using the wrong technique for your particular watch type.
Removing the Old Battery and Installing the New One
Once the case back is open, locate the battery inside the watch movement. The battery appears as a small, circular disc, usually silver or gray in color, positioned in a battery compartment or holder. Most pocket watch batteries are held in place by a metal retaining clip that presses down on the top of the battery. Before touching anything inside the watch, put on your cotton gloves or finger cots to prevent skin oils from transferring to the battery contacts or internal components.

To remove the retaining clip, locate the small screw or lever that holds it in place. Many clips have a single screw that you loosen counterclockwise with your small screwdriver. Loosen the screw just enough to lift the clip away from the battery—you don't need to remove it completely unless it's difficult to work around. Once the clip is raised, gently lift the old battery out of its holder. Examine the battery cavity for any corrosion, debris, or moisture. If you see white or blue-green crusty deposits, this indicates battery corrosion. Clean these deposits carefully with a small, dry brush or a corner of your lint-free cloth.
Before installing the new battery, check that the positive (+) and negative (−) sides align correctly with the watch's battery holder. The positive side of the battery typically faces upward toward the retaining clip. Place the new battery into the holder with the correct polarity, ensuring it sits flat and secure. Lower the retaining clip back into position and tighten the screw until the battery is held firmly but not crushed. Over-tightening can damage the battery or the watch movement. The clip should hold the battery securely enough that it doesn't move when you gently shake the watch, but you should still be able to lift it away with reasonable pressure from your screwdriver.
Practical takeaway: Wear gloves when handling the new battery to prevent corrosion. Remove the old battery carefully, clean the battery cavity if needed, and install the new battery with correct polarity. Secure the retaining clip firmly but not excessively tight—the battery should be held securely without risk of damage.
Closing the Case and Testing Your Watch
After the new battery is installed, carefully inspect the watch's interior before closing the case back. Look for any loose screws, debris, or anything out of place. If you
